In being thus insensitive to the illumination-dependent properties of things, Noë's understanding of experience is, in one way, even more impoverished than Berkeley's. For Berkely, what we strictly speaking see is confined to light and color. Apparently, for Noë, we do not strictly speaking see illumination properties---illumination properties come to figure in our experience thanks to our practical understanding of the sensorymotor contingencies that apparent color is subject to.

+If color experience is illumination insensitive, if we do not strictly speaking see illumination-dependent properties of things, then experience for Noë is, if not a mental picture, then in one important respect picture-like. Picture depict illumination-dependent properties of things in much the way that illumination-dependent properties are presented in experience as Noë conceives of it. It is as if he takes the painterly attitude one can take towards the visible scene to be revelatory, at least in part, of the apparent colors of things. The painterly attitude, however, is much more complex.
