It is very much a creature of the early 2000s,\nwhen almost every library we use was a niche item that appeared in no\npackage managers. It was put there in 2004 so that Cygwin users\nwouldn't have to do it themselves, but as a result forced it into the\nlinker flags for everyone. Things like this should not be forced,\nthey should be provided to configure in the command line only when\nneeded.
