Clive, ’tis Ebonrai/Kaelis.
Its come to my attention that Absurd contains many copyright infringing images. We’re pretty much talking the entire tileset is cobbled together from copyrighted sources, that cannot be placed under the GPL by the tileset’s author...
You might want to reconsider using it in Vulture’s, too. =/
I’ll have to grab the ones I know that are for sure, but, I’m going to figure that there’s a lot more where those came from. =/

Absurd Tileset contains many non-gpl images
Kaelis,
Just a minor point of correction: neither this project nor any of my other projects use GPL. I generally use the NetHack Public Licence for NetHack related projects or BSD if not tied directly to or with NetHack source code.
However, that does not change copyright infringements. Please let me know if you find any.
Thanks
Clivee

Hey Clive,
iirc, you told me once that John(?) licensed the Absurd tileset under the gpl? or at least the original version?
I’ll just grab the tilesets, and see what I can find, again...

I checked John’s site but I found no license information. I do remember the license, it was a strange and unique one. Once found I’ll post it if anyone’s interested. Basically John said you could use as you wanted - but it involved him using a baseball bat for something ... been a long long time, I can’t remember off hand.

http://tineye.com/search
This is a very useful image search that allow you to find if your own copyright has been infringed by uploading your image from your computer and showing which websites have it stored/resized/watermarked.
I think it can be used to precisely know which pictures in the graphics pack are causing trouble.

I’m going to leave off taking any action whatsoever in this project (for now). If anyone ever complains I’ll remove the entire absurd tileset with immediate affect. nhtiles is just a collection of tilesets made by others and some utilities to manipulate/resize and reuse in different nethack variants. I cannot take responsibility for infringements made my tileset creators who then released "their creations" freely.
The Vulture’s project, however, having merged absurd tileset over all it’s own graphic data where monster/object graphics where missing is a whole other problem and I need to remove Absurd from the now "tainted" source as soon as possible.

Sorry, changed my mind :P
... perhaps I should leave the code for dealing with the absurd tileset in place but remove the tileset data and only reference a link. In that way preventing possible copyright issues.

The Absurd tileset is cobbled together from dozens, if not hundreds, of sources.
The majority of creatures, probably 2/3, came from "someplace".
They’re smooshed down and almost all have been recolored or altered in some way.
Some are art, some are photographs, heck, the stuff came from all over the place.
Having said that, I did that knowingly and willingly, and made no secret of it, as it’s obvious that what I did with the Absurd tileset would qualify as "Fair use", and I don’t care what people do with the final product.
Chop it up, use it for whatever. Who cares?
Having said that, I’d like to add that I put a hell of a lot of work into the thing, and only because I wanted it for myself, and no one else. If I could have done he whole thing using existing art, I would have. Of course, the vast majority of the images didn’t exist anywhere, so I had to make ’em by hand.
I wouldn’t worry about legal issues regarding the tileset. It’s been something like five years since I made the thing and no one had kicked my door in with a lawsuit.
