First, thanks for the great work
When going down stairs to a new level, Claw crashed. Recover.exe worked. However when trying to re-load saved game, paniclog says
0.0.7E7F3 20090626: panic Memory allocation failure; cannot get 4278190148 bytes
4278190148 = 0xFF000044, maybe a negative value for memory is being requested?

The thing just crashed, and unable to recover. When trying to create character named ’Robal’ it is trying to load from save files and crashes again.

Hi,
Have you tried using the recover utility inside the vulture’s installation directory to try fix the save game

Run it with -d path as i remember and it runs/ends. It did not produced any info if it is doing something or just exiting so I don’t know if it worked or not. Or maybe I just didn’t run it in proper way (no meaningful example in readme for me).

Vultures Crashed
Unfortunately the Vulture’s project is only a graphics wrapper around the game of nethack/slashem itself so quite ofter the crashes are caused by the underlying engine and would have to be fixed by the upstream projects. Without more detailed information I just cannot tell where the problem is :(

I was playing a Vultures Claw game that I had previously saves, and had told it to keep the save file. Several programs on my computer, including Vulture’s Claw, froze. I ended them all with Task Manager, then re-opened Vulture’s Claw. When I tried to use the name I had used before, I was told that Vulture’s Claw had encountered an error, and it crashed. It does not do this with other names, but this is still a pain, as the name it rejects belongs to a character-in-my-head to whom I am rather attached.

You have two options here. Try use the recover utility that was installed with the game to try fix that savegame or simply delete that savegame and create a new character by that name.

2 comments Created 5 months ago by clivecrousVulture’s Claw randomly crashing around turn 20kslashemxHappened about three times already, it just seems to crash at random. Always at the Gnomish Mines, after camping the altar in Minetown, at around turn 20k, although it might happen at other places or turns. Apparently it happens due to too many minions being "granted" by the deity. I’m not an expert at any of this coding thing, so can’t really tell. Don’t know how to reproduce it either, other than it always seems to happen in those circumstances.
P.S.: The recovery tool doesn’t seem to do anything. It automatically closes as soon as I try to open it and doesn’t recover anything. Already lost a few good characters due to these crashes, and they apparently don’t even leave bones files when this happens, so it’s starting to become a bit of a pain in the ass.
Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask these things, but this is the closest thing to a vulture’s forum I could find.P.P.S.: Don’t know who’s responsible for this, so chose none.

Vulture’s Claw randomly crashing around turn 20k
The recovery utility is a utility to recover a broken save game file provided by (in your case) SlashEM to try fix corrupt save game files. You will need to have a console open to run it. This sounds like a SlashEM issue but I cannot tell without more information.
I would recommend asking on the Slash’EM mailing list:

Once I had ball chained to character i pick it up and it shown in inventory then I tried to drop it and was unable, anyway - strange behaviour.

How do I fix this?
I fumbled with my mouse while loading Vulture’s Claw. I do not know what I option I selected or mouse button I mistakenly pressed.
The text messages in the pop-up windows are messed up and unreadable. From the first pop-up asking my name on the text are messed up and wherever my onscreen mouse moves the tile underneath is a horizontally aligned with the flat edges on the top bottom and sides instead of the corners. Also, the graphic tile under the mouse looks like the background graphic or default graphic for that area.
I am running vultures-2.1.2-claw_win32-1.exe on windows xp pro service pack 3.

Yes. I just tried that. Then I tried reinstalling then uninstalling, rebooting then downloading and installing from the new download file.
OK, Vulture’s Claw is almost definitely not the problem but what do I have to do to get up and running again? I only see this problem occurring in Vulture’s Claw.
I also tried CTRL + R and CTRL + L to redraw the screen.
Here is a screenshot of inventory. I am also playing in explore mode.

Yes.
Assuming I am not playing the game then I change to fullscreen by going into the config folder, change C:\Program Files\Vulture’s Claw\config\vultures.conf file to vultures.txt then change fullscreen=0 to fullscreen=1. And then play the game in fullscreen? Yes, the problem is still there.

this is very strange, I can only assume, for now, that it’s related to some other windows issues I’ve seen lately with regard to DLLs. One thing that might be worth trying is going into the installation folder and overwriting the dlls there with newer releases on the net.
For example download the SDL dll here:
http://www.libsdl.org/release/SDL-1.2.13-win32.zipoverwrite that and see if it helps?

I did a search for all the dll files in C:\Program Files\Vulture’s Claw and replaced them. Vulture’s Claw gave errors about libvorbisfile-3.dll, libvorbis-0.dll and I think one other but too little sleep for me to remember. I installed a copy of Vulture’s Claw onto my desktop and copied the working dll files into C:\Program Files\Vulture’s Claw. Vulture’s Claw still has the graphics problem.
I will check back when I wake up.

I’m very confused about this problem too. Others do not experience this. I am unable to reproduce this :(
Before I go find a fresh machine to to a clean windows install on to test this in a pristine environment:
- Do you have any problems with other open source games using SDL libraries? (eg Wesnoth)
- Is it just Vulture’s?
- Does Vulture’s Eye also do the same for you or does that work fine?

Wesnoth works fine as far as I can tell. I have never played Wesnoth but saw no obvious problems. I also downloaded and played Nethack 3.4.3 with no apparent problems.
Perhaps the area of the games where the problem occurs is a clue? Other than the missing border around the game, the ’gray stone’ windows that are first seen when asked "What is your name?" is where I first see the problem.
Anyways, I wil work on figuring out how to get my new Centos Linux OS to see Vulture’s Claw install files as installable. And I will keep an eye (my third eye) on this ticket.

Segfault when trying to save.
NetHack/SlashEM failed to find compress at ’/usr/bin/compress’install this for your distribution and ensure that that executable is at that location. Or if you built from the source code edit:
nethack/include/config.h slashem/include/config.h
and search for " COMPRESS " and edit it according to your system.
Ideally use your distribution’s package for vulture’s which should have those pre-configured.

Invocation Problems -- NetHack Impossible in Vulture’s?
10 comments Created 5 months ago by clivecrousDuring the Quest, one knows that the player receives their role’s quest artifact, along with the Bell of Opening required to perform the invocation and descend further into the dungeon. In Vulture’s Eye, the Quest cannot load. Ever. I know this is a problem being worked on, but the random map that is generated seems not to contain either the Bell or the Quest artifact, unless I’ve overlooked a hidden door. Is there a quick patch or fix to this, so that I may attempt the invocation, or am I stuck until the new Vulture’s releases? Thanks for the attention given to this query, and I hope that something can be done.

Daniel, when you have time, please verify that this fix is in the current repo, if it’s in then lets release now. Otherwise lets just fix this first, then insta-release.

enable "#define DLB" in config.h
This should fix bug #23.
Apparently the result of the windows build is hopelessly confused without
this and becomes unable to load quest levels.
I can’t say I understand the root cause, which is no doubt buried deeply
in the incomprehensible windows Makefile.
Anyway, this fixes it for me, so I hope it’ll work for everyone else too.by DanielT

Invocation Problems -- NetHack Impossible in Vulture’s?
The problem was that the DLB defines were being miss-defined in the windows build system. At it’s core it’s a flaw with NetHack’s own build system and it’s dealing (and confusion) about when DLB is defined and when not.
To be frank, in hindsight I’m astounded that quests were the only element affected. Daniel fixed this quite some time ago, and it was also tested by himself, myself as well as one or two other volunteers at the time.
It’s been quite a while since that change and that testing was done and a lot has happened with code for me in this as well as other projects (I’ve even changed jobs twice since then) that I completely forgot what it was all about and how much was affected.
Suffice to say: It was fixed and tested quite some time ago, it took a while to become available for public consumption -- and I’m sorry about that.

Which configuration file did you change? please give me the exact filename. Was it the one in your home directory or the template which gets copied to the per-user file if that file does not yet exist.
Also which operating system.

So, that file in the config directory is actually a template, that was copied to my home directory, and I must change it there? That would explain the problem, yes.
I did not see this fact mentioned in any documentation included with the game....

I'll start caring about this if anyone complains
-
I’m working on building a RPM package of the current version for Mandriva.
I have almost succeeded, but ran into problems with the alignment of files in the filesystem. Without patching the vultures’ source code, the package I made was invalid - there were problems with files, e.g. executables in /lib/.
After some struggles, those questions arose:
How to tell Nethack that it should look for logs, saves and bones in /var/games/ in such way that the Eye and the Claw don’t try tu use the same resources? There is a patch for other Linux distros that seems to alter the directory, but as far as I see, it’s pointing both to the same files.
What is the purpose of the lock ("perm") file? Should it be located in /var/ so that every user uses the same file or in /home/ of each user? I assume it’s just a lock for the same user not to run the program twice, but why is it expected to be in the same folder as the global files? For now, I will try to overcome those problems by putting symlinks for those files in the same folder as the executable, but it’s not an elegant solution.
As soon as I finish the package, I will attach the resulting spec file here or commit it to the trunk.

If you are building Vulture’s for a distribution you should NOT be using the vulture’s build system.
You should also not be using the "full" source packages.
Rather go here:http://downloads.usrsrc.org/vultures/2.1.2/ and get either the eye or the claw tarball and use NetHack / SlashEM standard build systems and patches as per your distro.
You should already have NetHack in your distro so make nethack/slashem a dependancy and you should then install only the vultures data and the vultures executable, ignoring all nethack files within vultures.
Doing it this way means that you can have vultures and NetHack installed simultaniously, both using the same savegames etc.
Your distro could already have several nethack interface options eg: console, gtk, qt. All these, as well as vultures, can be installed simultaniously on the same pc. you can save and switch interfaces and continue playing.
With regards to nethack and how it uses it’s files, your best reference is the nethack project. We only wrap visuals around what they’ve done ( see http://www.nethack.org ).
On a side note. RPMs already exist for SuSE as well as RedHat, perhaps look at those specs?

Thanks for your response.
I based my spec file on what I found for SuSE and Fedora, both of which based on the full source.
I thought Vultures are somehow too integrated (statically linked? not sure how the interfaces are wrapped on top of Nethack), hence the questions.
Unfortunately, the only version of I found in the official repositories is integrated with Falconseye.
Are there any special preparations needed to install Vultures (any of them) over an existing installation of Nethack?by rhn

The only preparations are preparations that in no we we can make.
- You need to make sure that NetHack is configured (for the Vulture’s compilation) in exactly the same way as the (existing) NetHack package is configured when it is built. Normally this is through distro-centric patches.
- You need to install only Vulture’s executable and Vulture’s data (in the same place as the existing nethack executable and data gets installed)
Unfortunately I’ve never done this for any package management system myself. I just tend to install all my own software manually in /usr/local :(
Just remember that "installing over" mustn’t actually replace or overwrite any files. If it’s doing that, then something is wrong.
The reason Vulture’s can never setup all these directory setting itself is because NetHack has been taken so many varying routes for various Unixes over time. There is no one true and correct method, it’s all left to the person creating the distribution package.
It’s for this reason that Vulture’s, on it’s own, just makes and installs by default into a user’s home directory. To try guess where their system might want or need specific file types would be madness ;)
Another thing you should most probably keep in mind is that the NetHack and SlashEM file installations are done for a single primary reason ... this being that it’s a multi user game. They expect you to be able to login as any user, yet play with the same highscore list, the same bones files etc etc
hope this helps

Thanks, I was starting to believe the original Nethack and Vultures Eye don’t share any files except of the variable files.
I will postpone the proper packaging (nethack, slashem, vultures-data-common, vultures-eye and vultures-claw in separate packages, with appropriate dependencies) until I know something more advanced about packaging and about the nethack configuration.
The tip about the same configuration was very helpful, I didn’t expect Nethack data or variable files to differ depending on the configuration within one version of the program.
For the specific files - I will try to defeat this madness - for this specific distribution :)
Being a multiuser game can lead to some other problems with packaging. Shared bones files can add up to the gameplay, while I wouldn’t like any other user to play with my saved character.
Will have to look at the configuration files and/or the code to solve this.by rhn

"Normal" distribution installations for nethack solve this already. Your savegames are not shared by other users and are stored with the current user given permissions but in the shared data area. Thus the start of all that wierdness. Specifically BSD vs Posix "standards" for how user/group/other permissions should be in odd cases like this. You’ll also probably find on many distributions the normal nethack executable has some form of sticky bit (+s) chmod madness happening to obscure this all from the user ;)
You’re probably getting a good idea why I try distance myself from the actual setup of this. It’s VERY different on every distribution. Each distro prefers (as it should) for the files to follow that distros own standards. NetHack itself is flexible enough (via patching) to cater for every eventuality, and every wierd Unix type and Unix-like.

Drop the gold, rub it, throw it (up to test if it falls heads or tails, down to get store credit, or into a fountain), or pay on stores (which I find more intuitive that the way it’s done right now, that is clicking on you).

Gold management
I’m not exactly sure what you mean by this. Do you mean the actual gold amount ( eg $:1234 ) in the bottom left of the interface?
I like your idea, but perhaps move the gold out of the interface at the bottom left and give it it’s own icon to join those on the right (perhaps a pile of gold with the amount you have written on it) and when you click that, it gives you options.
That said however, I don’t think the gain for this addition even as originally suggested is enough to warrant the amount of change that would be required.
I’d only recommend this change if we eventually add an always-visible inventory (As some interfaces do) and have gold feature in there, with other items, each with their own actions available in popups.

I’ve been thinking if it could be a good idea to have a new character in Vulture’s Claw (well, Slash-Em). There’s a good weapon (well, really a tool) out there, and no Character is allowed to use it without committing any penalties: I’m talking about the lightsaber, so there’s no better Character for using it than a Jedi. I know there’s a patch of it somewhere in the Web, but I’d have some ideas in order to include it in Slash-Em as a new character. Something like:
Jedi Class (J):
Aligment: Jedi, if Legal; Sith, if Chaotic (No Neutral aligm.). Legal God: Light Side of the Force; Chaotic God: Dark Side of the Force (of course!) :) Races: Legal or Chaos: Human, Hobbit, Elf, Dwarf; Chaotic only: Drow Stats: AGI, DEX and WIS, maybe? I see a Jedi/Sith as as sort of crossover of Samurai and Monk Weapons: ONLY Lightsaber (Blue/Green for Jedi, Red for Sith) (and maybe he could use the Staff, too); all of other weapons, penalties when use them. Combat: Martial Arts, bare-hands combat, throwing Armour: Robes, capes and leather (no metal-reinforced ones) Spells: Jedi: schools of Healing, Divination and Enchantment; Sith: schools of Attack, Matter and Enchantment. Intrinsics and/or Techniques: Stealth, Speed, Jump, Power Surge Technique, Warning, Identify (?), Reinforce Memory Tech., Force Healing (same than the “Chi Healing” of the Monk), Force Strike (Chi Strike), Kiii Tech., etc. *Other: something that could make a little more difficult this PC would be a code of conduct (like the Knight or Monk). Do you think it could be good if the Jedi class have the ability of identify “b/u/c” stuff? What do you think of it? Any hint?

Suggestion: A new Class for Slash-Em: Jedi
The jedi class patch is here:
http://bilious.homelinux.org/?141
This feature request should go to slashem itself, not Vulture’s.
Try here:

Although discussing it on the slash’em mailing list is the more "traditional" way that things get added to slashem.

Trying to compile the vulture’s claw source package I noticed two problems with the installation docs.
The commands in this section:
Compiling and installing for system deployment and actual gameplay
The first thing you need to do is create the required symbolic links to the vultures source within the NetHack and the SLASH’EM directory trees. This is done as follows: - ln -s ../../vultures nethack/win/vultures - ln -s ../../vultures slashem/win/vultures
are ambiguous.
It’s not clear which folder they are relative from. They are incorrect, too. Make in $MAIN_SRC_DIR/nethack/win/vultures fails to compile the source files because of nonexistent $MAIN_SRC_DIR/nethack/win/nethack directory (according to the GNUMakefile contents).
The problem was gone after creating a symlink from $MAIN_SRC_DIR/nethack/win/nethack to $MAIN_SRC_DIR/nethack
If I’m not mistaken, the proper commands are:- ln -s ./nethack ./nethack/win/nethack
- ln -s ./slashem ./nethack/win/slashem
In both cases the ./ directory is the top directory of the archive (vultures-2.1.1, in my case).
The second command was not tested as I’m not using slashem. This ticket has 0 attachment(s).

The problem is that o_id and m_id and several other ids of lists and hash tables are cast to and from pointers of different size.
I suggest using the platform dependent size_t or avoid using the id as a pointer. This ticket has 0 attachment(s).

I’m changing this status to hold because I have 64bit linux myself and I’m finding it fairly annoying that I’ve been unable to compile and play nethack/vulture’s and any of my other related projects since I moved to 64bit. After giving this some thought I’m going to work on a 64 bit patch myself and I’ll (temporarily) integrate it into all nethack source trees I maintain including of course Vulture’s.

I'm sorry, I don't :(
I wouldn't know where to start on a Mac.
My only suggestion would be to download NetHack vanilla sources and follow it's documentation on getting it to build. If you can get NetHack built and running I would then be able to assist you with further alterations for Vulture's from that point onward.

Is the wrong graphic being used to represent Juiblex?
He’s not supposed to have a head or a face. I’ve summoned him several times and he looks like he’s mayby a copy of some other demon. According to wikihack ( http://nethack.wikia.com/wiki/Jubilex ) Juiblex:
* can fly. * can flow under doors. * can survive underwater. * has no head. * can see invisible creatures. * is acidic to eat. * is poisonous to eat. * is not a valid polymorphable form. * is a demon. * is a lord to its kind. * is male. * always starts as hostile. * can follow you to other levels. * is nasty. * wants the Amulet of Yendor. * waits for you to come. * has infravision. * appears only in Gehennom. Here is his encyclopedia entry:
Little is known about the Faceless Lord, even the correct spelling of his name. He does not have a physical form as we know it, and those who have peered into his realm claim he is a slime-like creature who swallows other creatures alive, spits acidic secretions, and causes disease in his victims which can be almost instantly fatal. This ticket has 2 attachment(s).

first of all vulture’s is great thx for this fine work.
But playing nethack with vultures is quicker and since i play it this way, i again die often from starvation.it would be fine if we had some colored overlay with different grades of transparency for Hungry, Weak or Fainting.
For example:
food related color yellowHungry with 80% transpareny
Weak yellow with 65% transpareny
Weak yellow with 50% transpareny
Encumbrance related collor red (think of blood in head)
Burdened with 80% transpareny
Stressed with 65% transpareny
Strained with 50% transpareny
Overtaxed with 35% transpareny
Overloaded with 20% transpareny
if everything is fine transparency is 100%

OK forgive me if I am totally off base here. I figured out that the DL was not setup to run as an executable, which I was able to fix. But when I run it, here is the output that I receive. Again, I don’t know enough about Unix to know it this is something that I did wrong or something in the DL.
Thanks again.
Verifying archive integrity... All good.

You should not be in the install folder you should be in the root folder of the game. The one where, if you just type make it gives the following results:
@@@ text % make to build NetHack in your home directory: make nethack-home
to build Slashem in your home directory: make slashem-home
to build Both in your home directory: make home
@@@If you don’t get the above results when just typing in make then you are attempting to build from the wrong folder and it’ll never work ;)

Unix Install Instructions
OK I may be totally off then. I apologize for my newbishness, I have only recently started using Unix. I am normally a Windoze person, but I am learning! Honest! Hopefully this has not been in vain.
I downloaded the following file: vultures-2.1.2-full_unix-1.bin.sh
It saved to the desktop and I doubleclicked it to run. It tried opening it with gedit and errored out until I set the "Allow executing file as a program" property on. The I doubleclicked and ran it.
It then created this folder: home/phlimm/vultures/vultureseyedir and gave me the error list that is in my second post (dated 08/07/08). Then we proceeded with the installs and such. After each install, I doubleclicked the file, which I had moved to the newly created folder and reported the results.
At this point if I use the terminal to browse to the home/phlimm/vultures/vultureseyedir folder (with the file there) and type in make, here is what I get back:
make: *** No targets specified and no makefile found. Stop.
Note that in each attempt, NO files were extracted. The only thing there is the one I originally downloaded. Also NO other folders have been created.
Again I apologize if I have been doing something wrong.

I find it really & entirely too complicated to split a stack.
I don’t see any way to split a stack in any way other then dropping via the graphical interface. And even that is limited. There may be keyboard commands to do it, but I forget the keyboard commands, don’t want to spend a bunch of time memorizing them either. Not having to remember so many keyboard hotkeys is part of the charm of a graphical interface.
For example, if I want to put 5 of my 7 stack of tripe into my bag of holding when riding a dragon. I have to...
1. Open my inventory, note/write down/remember the letter for the tripe stack item.Close Inventory.
Get off my dragon.(else s/he will eat a tripe when I drop it)
Press d for drop, put 2 for quantity, then the letter for tripe, to drop 2 tripe.
Apply my bag of holding, choose the stack of 5 tripe to put into the bag.
Pick up the dropped 2 tripe that I want in my main inventory.
Get back on dragon.
While two of those steps can be skipped if your not on a mount trying to split something that mount eats. Even five steps to split a stack and put part of that stack in a bag is entirely too many steps.
One should be able to split entirely via the graphical interface IMO. As in, being able to split from the inventory screen.
Also, gold should show in main inventory as a item for dropping, splitting etc.

Stack splitting interface
Two ideas for stack splitting interface.
You could make a stack split option when you click on a stack. Clicking on this will ask you for a number, then create a second stack in the same location of that number.
Or possibly a number thing next to any item. Normally this would be at max, but clicking on the number would allow you to type in a new number (plus possibly up and down arrows?) When that item is selected, only the number entered will be effected (if it’s selected to put in something, applied like candles, or what ever) If the number entered is higher then the actual amount, the actual amount is used. That probably would be more complicated to implement, but might be better.

Every time I load a new game or reload a existing game, it forgets it’s settings.
For example, my preferred setting of .5 wall transparency (otherwise its too hard to spot dangerous monsters, especially when behind several walls)
Also macro settings.
Macro settings could only be remembered within one game. But perhaps a option that a macro be remembered game to game, or every time you use that class.

Settings need to be remembered.
Just a note that these can be set permanently by editing the config file outside of the game. However I agree that the game should save these (wherever possible) itself when changed ingame

Maybe you could even make macro settings so that they save to a particular game?
Since different classes, and different games, will have different letters assigned to items etc, and different things you want to macro.

Would it be possible to have different graphics for each PC and monsters -and even stuff- in this new version of Vulture’s? I mean, an Ice Troll being graphically different than a Rock Troll, for instance, or a Knight being distinct than the Undead Slayer? Or graphical differences between weapons and such? It would be nice!! (If you need some ideas and inspirations about monsters, take a look here: http://www.wizards.com/default.a.../mix/gallery) It’s plenty of hints! :)

As far as I’m aware, at this stage NetHack (Vulture’s Eye) has all unique graphics, I’m not sure about Slash’EM (Vulture’s Claw) creatures.
Unfortunately my code that tested this seems to have been removed at some point by daniel (wonders why)
I’ll have to reimport that patch of mine and re-run my graphic checks to generate a list of what’s missing.

Actually, now that we’re using git it’s much simpler to add a branch with this tiny patch in it and keep it out of the main code. I do agree with Daniel that it shouldn’t be in main, it is useful however.
I’m going to assign this to myself and at least take this as far as regenerating a list of what’s required. Hopefully some graphic artists will step up and volunteer ;)

I think create a new ticket, name it after the monsters you’ve created and attach the monster. then it’s much easier for us to keep track of which ones we’ve included in vulture’s and which we still need to do.

Also, I spoke to Daniel and apparently it’s much worse for object graphics. We are missing objects even for NetHack.
So, the current status:
NetHack:

monsters need graphics objects need graphicsThe list I pasted above here is for all the missing slashem monsters.
I will generate a full list of missing objects soon as well, and I’ll create a ticket for each and flood this ticket system quite heavily ;)

Probably a minor bug. I was engulfed by an air elemental and cast Charm monster. The Air elemental kept engulfing me and I thought it must have resisted somehow. Then the game said "Program error perhaps you’d better quit" it then did the standard "You hear the rumble of distant thunder."

Could you please supply me with which installer version you used, the exact filename of the installer is preferable.
The normal reason for the error you are receiving is a problem with paths. The incorrect DLLs being loaded for the application. There was a problem like this while I was updating for the latest release, I’d assumed it was fixed.
Please verify that you have version 2.1.2-1.

I have had no problems myself, nobody else has seen this issue. Today at work I found an "empty" PC, installed a fresh copy of windows, installed vulture’s and it ran.
My assumption (for now) is that there’s something very odd with GyroTech’s windows setup.

I’m marking this as invalid unless someone can get more info or someone is able to reproduce this with more information as to what is causing this.

GyroTech, I’ve marked this as "invalid" as far as the "general user" is concerned. I’m still keen to try help you get your issue sorted though. If it’s happened to you then there’s a good chance it could happen to someone else. knowing what causes this would benefit not just you, but anyone else encountering this, especially if it’s something I’m able to tweak or fix with a patch ;)
so ... with that in mind ... I’m particularly interested in the environment settings of that PC. If you do not feel comfortable pasting your full environ in this ticket, you may "email it to me directly":mailto://clive@crous.co.za and I give my word to treat is as confidential. Also feel free to strip out anything that is company-confidential as I’m only really interested in paths and other settings (particularly anything wierd some other open-source product may have set). If you wonder what I mean by environment, I mean the full output you get in the console if you just type:

Vulture’s crashes on Big Endian systems
After looking at this and from what I understand from the OP’s comments I’m going to assume that the vulture’s code is not completely cross architecture safe from this report.
Vulture’s does build fine on 64 as well as 32 bit architectures so the problem here, if indeed of architecture, is related to endianness only.

I’m compiling some pictures for models of monsters and creatures in order to Daniel (or other more expert than myself on this issue) adapts them for the game. Until now, I’ve been able to find many of human (or elf) monsters you need to complete the list, except for some of them (I’ll post them ASAP).
Some critters I haven’t able to find: Water Hulk (Suggestion: could you make it up and painting it blue, or giving it a watery hue?). Mrs. Werespider... I couldn’t hunt any pic of it; I can picture it in my mind as a sort of big tarantula with human torso. The Bugs Family... hmmm, maybe they may look like grid-bugs but in differents hues or such? And about the Killer Things (pile of killer coins, bad egg, killer food ration, etc.), you can add, at the existent ones, some frightful features like the "Trick Bag" has.

Suggestions for Monsters Graphics
I really hope when you say "find" that you have ensured that these are free-to-use non restricted pictures. Unless you can prove this, preferably also attaching the origin (where you got the image), we cannot add them to the game.
We’ve had trouble with this in the past and I was at one stage forced to remove a whole lot of images so I need to be sure of origins and license/freedom-of-use before adding anything to the game

Well, most of them were taken from minitures galleries thru the web. Some of the models are so obscure I believe the makers would thank you to include them in the game. :) Anyway, they’re just models for game’s monsters and such; if Daniel wants (or any graphic designer ready to do it), can modify them or adapts them simply. Those pics are just that, models or ideas. :)

There is no way of telling which messages are from the current move/turn
1 comment Created 5 months ago by clivecrousHi, I think vulture’s is great, but I don’t play it too often because messages show up all at the same time. Could it be made an option that includes the single message and consequent stop of the game if there are other messages? It would permit to those who activate it to avoid messages to go unnoticed. Just like the nethack tty console version behaviour. I post this because without the --more-- interruption it is hard to understand wich messages are of the old turn and wich are of the last one (What I mean is if it’s possible to implement an option for the message window that makes it behave like the console nethack does by default). OR maybe an option for changing the colors of old messages and new messages, because at the moment they’re both gray and the message fading isn’t really so helpful at it. I think it would add playability to the game.

having --more-- on messages
I agree with this completely. Another possible alternative is to prefix each message with the actual turn number. Prefer a more obvious seperation or implementing messaging exactly as specified in the official NetHack spec, which done by concatenating messages onto a single line as much as possible within the scope of a single turn and if there is screen width overflow call more() then continue from the next line concatenating the remaining turn’s messages -- rinse, repeat until you’re at a new turn, then newline.

To me the graphic for the sling looks like an outline of some sort of eye on a stalk until I look closer. Just having one of the leather bands go in a different direction to the other, and perhaps making it a bit smaller and having it lay on the floor would all help with this.

vultures-2.2.100-full_unix-1.bin.sh incorrect line endings
8 comments Created about 1 month ago by davosmithThe file vultures-2.2.100-full_unix-1.bin.sh is full of Windows-style CRLF line endings, rather than Unix-style LF.
This causes the script to immediately fail with the following error message:
bash: ./vultures-2.2.100-full_unix-1.bin.sh: /bin/sh^M: bad interpreter: No such file or directory(Tested on Ubuntu 9.10)

This file was built on Ubuntu 9.10 and tested on Ubuntu 9.10.
I will, however, have another look and see what's going on

Only unix line endings there.
Be sure to run this with /bin/sh (or just chmod +x it and execute it directly) this might be a problem with bash.

Also be sure to check that whatever tool you are using to download it is not treating it as text and modifying it. I will also double-check that github didn't do this themselves

Ok, it looks like github changed the file while uploading it. How "nice" of them. I will raise this issue with them. Use the source tarballs for now, sorry not much I can do if they're modifying files I'm uploading :(

Glad it wasn't just me - I was all set to send a screenshot of running the same command on the version I downloaded.
Currently grabbing source via git, so hopefully that will work

Update:
The problem is with Github's own uploader. It seems to "guess" which files are text and changes line endings to the type of line ending used by the operating system doing the uploading.(nice eh?)
:(
There's a separate utility written by one of the Github guys that's a commandline uploader. Unfortunately it does not work on my version of Ruby (being a ruby script) I'm going to be making some modifications to it and including it within the vulture's source code as part of my release building scripts so that uploads are automated too when I do a release.
For now use git clone, don't trust git's downloads since they modify content

I tried to use the link to download the bzip2 full and it failed.
Please use github's downloads. I'm closing down all other sites and links since github now provides all of this.
This will remain up for a while, until the migration is complete:
