RubyGem to help generate & maintain RRDTool graphs

* Ability to create and push data into RRD files with multiple data sources
* Ability to draw graphs based on multiple RRD files with multiple data sources

SYNOPSIS:¶ ↑

Require and initialize the gem

require 'impulse'
imp = Impulse::Graph.new

Lets push some data into an RRD file, it will be created if it doesn’t exist…

imp.push("elb_eu_west", 5000)

We’ll now have an RRD file named ‘elb_eu_west’ and it will contain a data source called ‘data’

To draw a graph based on this data…

imp.draw("elb_eu_west", :hour, { :filename => 'elb_eu_west_hour.png', :title => 'ELB Requests - Last Hour', :vertical => 'Requests' })

We specify the name of the RRD file, the time duration we want, it can be…

:hour
:day
:week
:month
:year

…or any value in seconds.

Then some various other graphical options.

If we want to have more than one data source in the RRD file, we can do that too…

imp.push("data_in_out", { :in => 50, :out => 20 })

We will now have a ‘data_in_out.rrd’ file and it will contain 2 data sources named ‘in’ and ‘out’

To draw a graph with two data sources…

imp.draw(

    'In' => { :name => "data_in_out", :data => :in, :color => '#000000' },
    'Out' => { :name => "data_in_out", :data => :out }

Simply need to specify the different data sources within a hash, since we provide the name of the file we can combine multiple files…

    'Requests' => { :name => "elb_eu_west" }

Note that it will attempt to guess as much of the options as it can, as you can see we didn’t have to tell it the name of the data source for the ‘elb_eu_west’ RRD file.

All can be configured on a per graph basis.

All can be configured on a per RRD basis.

ADDITIONAL PARAMS:¶ ↑

You can pass additional parameters to imp.draw which will be passed along to the ‘rrdtool graph’ command without modification. Use this to overlay additional data if required. For example:

    'In' => { :name => "data_in_out", :data => :in, :color => '#000000' },
    'Out' => { :name => "data_in_out", :data => :out },
    'Requests' => { :name => "elb_eu_west" }
  }, 
  :hour, 
  {

  'VRULE:1332421230#FF00FF:"An event"'

will result in a vertical line being overlayed at the specified timestamp, in the colour ‘#FF00FF’ labelled as ‘An event’. Separate multiple parameters with a space.

You will need to refer to the rrdtool graph documentation for the available commands you can use with this option.

Yes, this is hacky as anything, it has no tests and does some stuff in a really bad way.

This is meant as a very dirty first release, feel free to make changes and pull request.
