The new version of matplotlib (1.2.0) causes a malloc error (pointer not allocated) when I try to run the ipython html notebook.

This should work and "works for me" ™️. Can you give more detail? What platform are you on? What versions of Python, IPython and Numpy? What backend are you using?

@DanielMorton Can you provide a short example that reproduces the problem? Preferably one with no dependencies (other than ipython and matplotlib, of course).

Also, have you tried the 1.2.1 release candidate? It's not released yet, but it'd be informative to discover whether the problem still exists in the upcoming release.
