Woo hoo! TV Shows is back! This is fantastic news.
Many shows seem to be working like a charm, but two of my favorites are still having problems: Daily Show and Colbert Report. When I click to subscribe, it hangs trying to find the RSS feed. I know ezrss.it has a feed for it - can't figure out why TV Shows isn't finding it.
I'm happy to help troubleshoot in any way I can. Is anyone else having this problem? Am I the only one?
All the best,
George Garner

Some are, some aren't. Can't figure out any pattern to it. For example, Better Off Ted, Parks and Rec, and Community seem fine. 30 Rock, The Office, Daily Show and Colbert just hang trying to retrieve the episode list.
Happy to do anything I can to help troubleshoot.
Best,

Best,
GWGAre you using the latest version of TVShows (0.4.4 - 081)? Also, could you open up Terminal and tell me what it outputs when you enter
ruby --version?My default answer is usually to run the Uninstaller and see if that fixes it, but I'll warn you that you will lose your subscription list and any settings. Doing that is totally up to you, but I can't guarantee it'll help.
I am using the latest version (0.44-081), and my version of Ruby is "1.8.2 (2004-12-25) [powerpc-darwin8.0]"
I only have about three or four shows working right now, so I don't mind trying to uninstall and reinstall to see if that works. I'll do that now and drop another line to let you know what happens.
Cross your fingers,
GWG
Nope, uninstall and reinstall did not seem to help. I'll go through some of my usual shows and let you know which ones work and which ones do not:
Work:
. Community . Glee . Parks and Recreation . Better Off TedNot work (hangs at "Start Subscription with" screen):
. 30 Rock . Daily Show . The Office . Colbert ReportTo define clearly what "Not working" means: When I click "subscribe" next to the show name, it brings up the window to show the episode list. Those that work give me an episode list fairly quickly (within 2-5 seconds). On the others, the window continues to show the spinning grey wheel and never show an episode list. It doesn't matter whether I wait 10, 30, 50 seconds or twenty minutes (tried that once). I have to hit cancel, and after that I can continue to use the program just fine, but I am not subscribed to that particular show.
Let me know if you want me to send/paste a new console.log and/or TVShows.log.
Thanks for all your help!
GWG

I seem to be having the same issue here :(
Especially with Colbert/Daily show. One thing I notice that looks fishy is a constant error:

Any ideas?
Could you open Terminal and tell me what it says when you enter

Glaschu:~ andy$ ruby --version
ruby 1.8.6 (2008-08-11 patchlevel 287) [universal-darwin9.0]
I believe the error with for example the Daily show and the colbert report is because of a change in naming by ezrss:
http://ezrss.it/search/?mode=simple&show_name=daily+show
As of Dec 8 the 'show name' doesn't include the day and month anymore - just the year. The torrent link is still the same.
I was subscribe to the daily show, and it shows as last episode Dec 7th. I have the same errors in the logfile as above. This is on the new 0.45Hope this helps, awesome job on tvshows
Please log in to comment.Ugh. Unfortunately it looks like tazzz is correct. I don't understand why they would have changed the name formatting. It's been the same since day one.
Looking into a fix. I think it should be easy, but every time I say that I turn out to be wrong.

Please log in to comment.Unfortunately this seems to be an issue of the torrent links returning a 404 error. I'll be adding an error check in the next version to make sure this doesn't happen again.
Thank you for reporting the issue, and especially for listing the shows. :)

5 comments Created 4 months ago by mconwellCreates torrents when ezrss.it returns an error 404minorxI noticed tonight that the show NCIS LA 1x3 [VTV] was downloading a 0K torrent.
Using Safari and looking at the show list (http://ezrss.it/search/?show_name=NCIS+LA&show_name_exact=true) showed 3 episodes. Clicking on episode 1x1 and 1x2 downloaded the torrent. But episode 1x3 returned a 404 error to my browser (http://torrent.zoink.it/NCIS.LA.1x03.(HDTV-LOL)[VTV].torrent)
It appears that TVSHOWS does not correctly identify the 404 and as a result, it creates a 0K torrent.
This same behavior occurs using versions 0.4.2 and 0.4.3

There may be some decisions to make here, especially if ezrss.it never fixes their link.
In that case, do you:
• Stop all future downloads until the bad link is fixed (which may be never)
• Skip the episode altogether - 1 try and it is done
• Keep trying to get the bad link episode while downloading newer episodesAnd how will you alert the user since you run as a faceless background application.
Just some thoughts...
Agreed. There's a lot of thought that's going to have to go into this and I'm afraid I don't have an immediate answer to this problem.
Unfortunately it's not just a TVShows issue. No matter the program, most people are going to be using the ezRSS feeds to download shows. They're running into the same exact problems. Even worse, though, is that some of these 404 links are coming directly from EZTV. Viewing the NCIS: Los Angeles page on the EZTV site gives two different torrent links which both return error 404s.
Still (no offense to their hard work) the ezRSS site certainly does have a fair number of issues that seem to never get resolved. I'm trying to find the best way to go about scraping the EZTV website without causing a large bandwidth spike and I haven't found a good solution yet. I honestly think that it's the only way to be sure we're downloading new episodes of shows, at least until the ezRSS site gets its act together. For instance, see shows like The Big Bang theory where Ep3 still hasn't been posted on ezRSS but does happen to be on the EZTV website.
Perhaps it might be time to start looking into a way to use multiple source feeds (Mininova, Pirate Bay, etc) for the same show. Merge the feeds together somehow and remove duplicate episodes, with working ezRSS links having top priority.
Please log in to comment. If you add the web page scraping, it would be nice to allow that to be turned on/off via a program preference. Additionally, if it generates network spikes it might be nice to offer the ability to schedule it (like once a day at 3 am for example).
Multiple sites would help eliminates the issue of "what if ezRSS goes away". I think that type of issue came up with the original TVSHOWS. So that would be interesting. Again, a preference to allow the user to pick which sites might be in order for anyone loving Mininova but hating Pirate Bay (or whatever their personal preferences are).
Keep up the good work.

In the preferences pane, when I click on the "Disable" button, the "TVShows" button always shows as "enabled". Even though the "Disable" button now says "Enable", if I quit the app and reload it, it will show "Disable" again...
I don't know if it ever disables when I need it to.

Please log in to comment.Whoops, it looks like the preference panel text is bugged. If the text at the bottom of the show list it says disabled then you're fine.

Hello,
I am running TVShows (Version 0.4.7 (093)) on Snow Leopard 10.6.2 with Transmission (1.82 (10004)). Everything installed w/o any errors, but none of the shows I have subscribed to have downloaded. If I look at TVSows.log, I don't see any errors either. In fact the only entries are from the day I installed it. Is there a way to force the download process?TIA,
JonComments
Vote support for this issue. I am running Snow Leopard 10.6.2 with Transmission 1.82 (10004) as well. I have also tried pairing TVShows with other bittorrent clients, namely uTorrent 0.92 and Limewire, with a similar result -- nothing downloads. I do notice that when new shows air, the "last aired episode" list does get updated, even though nothing downloads.
In the TVShows.log I see hundreds of entries that look like this:

There is one of each kind for each show I've subscribed.
Please help!
Are there any errors newer than Jan 25th? All of them seem to revolve around not being able to connect to ezRSS.
I just rebooted and when I logged back in, all of the shows started downloading. Kind of odd that a reboot was needed, but everything appears to be working now.
Jon
Huh... that is extremely odd. You didn't have TVShows still open before did you? It doesn't start downloading episodes until after you close it.
Yes, there are issues newer than Jan. 25th. I continue to get issues similar to those above. The vast quantity of issues keeps me from enterting them here in detail, however if you need a copy of my log you can provide me an email address and I will send it to you in its entirety. The wording of and dating of these issues lends me to believe that my issues are not related to the eztv outages.
I have been able to go to eztv.it and manually initiate downloads of specific episodes which are not downloading via the tvshows subscriptions, again verifying that eztv availability is not what's at issue here in my case.
Please log in to comment. That was my mistake. I did have TVShows still open.

After EZTV came back up, it created a situation where there were some episodes that they did not post. An example of this is The Big Bang Theory which went from Episode 11 to Episode 13.
It seems that TVShows was expecting Episode 12, which was never posted and thus never recognized that Episode 13 was posted. The fix for me was to unsubscribe from the affected shows and then resubscribe starting at episode 13, thus skipping episode 12.
More of these are going to occur in the near future since EZTV has stopped posting VTV shows due to some sort of problem. Once they restart posting them, I would expect many shows to be in the same situation. One example is the show Better Off Ted, which was last posted to EZTV with Ep. 7 but in reality is up to Ep. 11. NCIS is another example where EZTV has missed episode 12.
I think that the TVShows app should recognize this situation and not wait for the missing episode - or offer the option to skip missed episode. You might have the program keep track of episodes that were missed and download them if they ever get posted (which I doubt they will).
Comments
Please log in to comment.TVShows should have skipped over those episodes that are missing, and I know that at least for me it did. It pretty much does a greater-than check: if the episode number is greater than the last episode you've watched then it gets downloaded, and the season is greater than or the same, then download this episode.
So... in theory it should have, and in practice it did here, so I'm not complete sure why it didn't work for you. :( If you happen to have the issue again let me know and I'll check over the code. Pretty sure it's all due a rewrite.

Looking at EZRSS.IT, it appears to have not been updated for several days. TVShows would benefit by having multiple feeds incase one goes down

It would be neat if it was possible to add custom RSS feeds in addition to the eztv feed. This would open up for downloading files via private trackers.
The way I'm thinking it is that you inject additional feeds into the feed pool. These feeds would then be the primary source of torrents and will be checked first. If no new episodes are available on those feeds then TVShows should go on and check eztv.
If you do implement support for custom feeds then you will probably have to implement rename support as well (I can create a separate issue for this if you want). If the file doesn't end with ".torrent" then it should be renamed to <episode-name>.torrent, possibly after replacing spaces with a point or undersore.
I can provide you with a TVTorrents RSS output if you want.
Please log in to comment.I've been looking at showRSS lately which roughly mirrors the ezRSS site, only they seem to have a lot less problems. Sounds like the owner even has it coded to grab new episodes from the ezTV Twitter feed whenever the website is down, which I thought was pretty cool.
It's... in the works, as is everything else for that matter, but it's pretty much a guaranteed feature eventually. Once I get showRSS added then I'll start working on custom user inputted feeds, which will be a whole lot easier since all the code will have already been rewritten.

Using NSLocalizedStringFromTable on the .m files. I can localize TVShows to Portuguese :)

But make it an option, please. I prefer to download my shows in an "Inbox" folder and only move them to their corresponding folder when I've seen them.

Matt told me, via email, that he haven't had the time to implement this yet. Just in case anyone is wondering =)
to manually right-click on a subscription and hit something like "Select download path..." would probably be the easiest way to do this.
EDIT: The latest version of Transmission can order downloads into folders, which results in the same thing

0 comments Created about 1 month ago by dzerovibeRename downloaded .torrent filesrequestsxI'd like to request an option to allow TVShows to rename .torrent files that are downloaded. Transmission has a 'Groups' option that allows you to configure certain options for a group of torrents, and you can automatically assign torrents to a group based on certain criteria. I would like to be able to tell Transmission that any .torrent files containing a certain tag (eg. [tvshows] ) should be assigned to a group for TV shows. Transmission can then place all the completed downloads into a separate folder for all my downloaded TV eps. This then allows me to make this folder a 'watched folder' so that any new file that appears there will trigger a specified script or app. (eg. running 'tvnamer.py' to clean up the episode filenames and move them to their correct folders)

One feature I'd love to see would be the ability to set quality/size on a per-show basis rather than just globally. I wouldn't like to see the global setting removed, but certainly there's a lot of content I don't care whether it's in HD or not.
Being in one of those countries where broadband is metered means careful allocation of downloads. Rather than risk blowing my allotment, I download everything in SD then re-download for the shows I want in HD.
Comments
Please log in to comment.Seconded. I came here specifically to request this too.
There are shows I really don't care if they are low quality, and others that I really do care to be as high res as possible. In fact some shows don't even have high quality versions available.
Also, thanks for taking up development of TV Shows! -

... but in the meantime there is a log file maintained in the ~/Library/Application Support/TVShows folder, called TVShows.log, which you can view.
I guess this should by rights be moved somewhere where console can be used to view it easily and also it could be monitored for size by the system scripts.

6 comments Created 25 days ago by AnnoCOther method for notification of application updatesrequestsxNotification for an update is only sent when you start TV Shows. Which means that you'll miss out on updates if you rarely start the app (because you have a stable list of subscriptions and almost never need to add/delete a show).
Is there a possibility to add an update reminder to the background process of TV Shows that checks for new episodes?
Thanks.

if you don't open the app, doesn't that mean you're happy with it?
There's code leftover from the original author that should open up TVShows if there's a new update. Of course I've never seen it in action, so I'll have to look into find a way to test whether it actually does work or not.
Looking into Growl notifications, which might certainly be a possibility with notifying users of app updates.
TVShows updated today (from 0.4.5 to 0.4.7), without any interaction from me!
Thus: it "SELF-UPDATED". This must have been triggered by an availability for download of new episodes for which I had subscribed. It never did that before...
I find this a nice, elegant solution.
Great work, Matt. Thanks
(I guess that this thread can be closed)
Oddly enough, I didn't change anything that would cause it to do that. If it truly did self update then it should have been doing it all along.
(Remember, I picked this show up from the old developer and I'm trying to make it a lot more stable and add some new features in the process)
Please log in to comment.Ah, confusing. Sorry...
I can't think of another reason that TVShows started, apart from it being kicked into action by the availability a new episode (Vuze opened right after). So it may be more likely that something (other) went wrong in the update-past (of TVShows on my computer).
I'll be looking forward to a new release to test it! :)

Will be nice to have TVShows running in 64-bits mode on 10.6 :)

I would like to second this, however, it really isn't a big deal as of now. It is a small application with a very small footprint. In terms of work load, the advantages of making it 64 bit ready are minimal, however, it seems like a natural step forward, especially as the application grows.

0 comments Created 2 months ago by theundoneMenu Bar Button to Enable/Disable TVShowsrequestsxThere are times when you need to temporarily disable TVShows to prevent it from downloading large files automatically. Like say when you're using a slow connection or a connection with a low bandwidth cap (satellite or phone tethering). I'd like to suggest the addition of a menu bar button that allows easy access to toggle TVShows on and off, and perhaps also force a search for new episodes.

I had the same issue. My problem was that the download directory (network share) wasn't mounted. Check ~/Library/Application Support/TVShows/TVShows.log to see if it contains more clues.
Thank you. :) Yes, please post anything in
~/Library/Application Support/TVShows/TVShows.logso that I can help you a little better. Please log in to comment. This is the last entry on the log file.
01/24/10 06:42:39 TVShows Error: TVShows is disabled.
It's been repeating that since Jan 17th.
I also have this when I launch TVShows
1/24/10 10:02:31 AM [0x0-0xa39a39].net.sourceforge.tvshows[58589] launchctl: Error unloading: net.sourceforge.tvshows
I only wanted the TVShows launchd job to run between the hours that I am home, not at work. (torrents are not kosher at work) I have another launch job that will run every 10 minutes. It checks the time, and will load or unload the net.sourceforge.tvshows job depending on the time of day.
So, I'm not sure what happened between on the 17th. But here was the last entry that wasn't like above.

I am trying to run this on a mac 10.5 server but for some reason it doesn't seem like the back ground service is running. Any ideas?
Comments
Please log in to comment. We use launchd so you won't actually see a process running in the background all the time, only whenever it needs to be. Unfortunately ezTV has had hardware issues the past few weeks so that could be the reason why you haven't had any torrents downloaded.

I'm not sure, but the few times this has happened to me it seems to be after the getting show list fails
lost all of my subscriptions as well on new version install :(
Just released an update for TVShows 0.4.4 that fixed the issue of lost show subscriptions on upgrade. (If you already lost your subscriptions then you won't see it. This should stop new upgraders from losing theirs, though.)
Still no ideas on the random losses, except that the show list and subscriptions shouldn't be saved to the same file. Working on that for the next version.
Hi,
There's something still happening with the config file.
I updated to 0.4.4 after the update
was made on the blog announcement and then I found no problem, and all shows downloaded fine. But I've opened the program today and all the subscriptions were gone.
Also, I remember changing the preferences when the mentioned update to the blog was published, and now that I've checked them again, they've also been reset.
And finally, you said on the blog announcement that
Dr.Who 20x5is now blocked, but when I've resubscribed I've seen it on the episode list. Not sure if this deserves it's own issue.I'm on a PowerBook G4 with 10.4.11.
Unfortunately the edit on the blog refers to TVShows 0.4.4 (080) — 081 is the most recent build. As soon as I released 080 I realized that subscriptions were lost as soon as people upgraded from 0.4.3. The edit refers to 081 that was released a few hours later.
I still have no idea what to do about randomly losing subscriptions other than moving them into
~/Library/Preferences/with all the other settings. It's a larger task than I realized before, but subscriptions should never have been saved in the same file as the show list for this very reason. Unfortunately I don't have an estimated release date but I hope to have it fixed by the major release (0.4.5 will probably just be bug fixes).Sadly you're correct. The Dr. Who 20x5 I blocked was from December 25, 2007. I'll have to go back in and blocked the 20x5 episodes from November 15th, 2009 (The Waters Of Mars 2009 Special). =\
Updated to 0.4.6 (092) today and lost my subscriptions. Luckily, I had a PLIST backed up via TimeMachine, but otherwise it would have been a pain in the butt.
