If you're installing a lot of ubuntu instances you can save some bandwidth by using a local mirror to install and update from. The problem (for us bandwidth deprived Aussies at least) is that a mirror can easily be 45GB. This would cost $450 to download at our datacentre. I downloaded using a home ADSL connection and took it to the datacentre on a USB drive. It's super fast to install extra packages now from my local apt-mirror.
