The strikethrough syntax in Markdown takes effect in the editing window but doesn't work in the Preview window.

If you remove the underscores, it works as expected. So you may have overridden the ~~'s wrapping them in the _ markdown italics emphasis characters. That doesn't explain why it seems to work in the .md file but not in preview though.
