Description

There are now no up-to-date plugins for NetBeans to compute a serialVersionUID. An option for this (using the serialver process behind the scenes) would be a welcome addition to the Source menu, and would solve the keeping-up-do-date problem.

Use case/motivation

Objective: ease of including a serialVersionUID while in the IDE, rather than having to go to a command window.

Well, just set the serialVersionUID to 1L when you have to set it, then increase it by one when needed.

Dear Laszio, Yes, I (with everybody else) know that solution. But it is very manual, and not the recommended solution. The use of serialver is the recommended way of doing a serialVersionUID, and there is little call for NetBeans to be so dismissive about it. NetBeans is (with good reason) a professional grade IDE. Modifying by 1 “when needed” (and when is that—it is not just when adding a comment or something equally innocuous) is not a worthy solution to be promoted by NetBeans or Apache. Bruce K. Haddon
