Separate input and output files?

This might be doable, but I was just curious...

I was wondering if I could have a 'template' file and then from this file, edit value(s) and save as another file? I got close:

yq -i '.spec.template.metadata.labels.version = "test"' test2.yaml  test.yaml**

Which tells me:

Error: stat test2.yaml: no such file or directory

If I simply:

touch test2.yaml

Then the above command does what I want it to. I dont mind the extra bash command and is easy enough to do, but i was curious if I was making this more complicated than it should be?
