audit single-letter alias names

This arguably applies to grammar parameter names as well. We previously discussed this here: #2411 (Only tangentially related.)

@mathiasbynens Maybe. It starts getting harder to read grammar alternatives once they start spanning multiple lines. But I would generally be in favour of exploring this change as well. You should create a separate tracking issue for it.
