Exception messages disappeared after upgrade to 0.23.1

We skipped 0.23.0 while #206 was being fixed.

But now since the upgrade (from 0.22.1), we are seeing this:

If it helps, I think that this is part of a pattern that looks like this:

try:
    ...
except Exception as e:
    honeybadger.notify(exception=e)

Reopening, as I don't think that PR addressed all the issues.
