Repository files navigation

The first few months of the new administration have brought significant changes to NIH and other HHS scientific funding. I created RePORTER reporter to track and visualize these changes. What was initially a simple plot of grants awarded in 2025 compared to previous years has grown to include data from multiple sources. I welcome feedback and corrections if you find any mistakes!

NIH RePORTER cumulative awards and award amounts

NIH RePORTER has information on all grants and contracts funded by NIH. These plots compare cumulative funding in the current year to the past 9 years through today's date. RePORTER updates late every Sunday.

Federal register

Under the Federal Advisory Committee Act study sections that review NIH grants need to be announced in the Federal Register at least 15 days before the study section meets. I parsed the meetings from Federal Register notices and created plots comparing the current year to the previous nine years.

Tracking Accountability in Government Grants System (TAGGS)

The Health and Human Services Tracking Accountability in Government Grants System (TAGGS) website has a link to a PDF of awards that have been terminated. The PDF is not easy to explore and does not contain context (e.g., investigators, keywords) that may be useful for analysis.

Institute-Specific Plots

The following NIH Institutes and Centers have individual plots available. Click on any link to view the corresponding interactive visualization.

Beta features (added 15 May 2025)

Several features have been requested in the last few months. The NIH fiscal year is October 1 through September 30. Adding plots that use fiscal year makes it easier to visualize spending in this interval.

Comparing total grant amounts in 2016 and 2025 ignores the impact of inflation. I created overall NIH plots that adjust historical award amounts to current‑dollar terms by first downloading the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI‑U, series CPIAUCSL) from the Federal Reserve’s FRED database, then computing the mean CPI for each calendar and fiscal year. Using the most recent CPI value as the reference, it derives an adjustment factor for each year—defined as the ratio of the latest CPI to that year’s average CPI—and multiplies every award amount by its corresponding factor.

I also created new plots that show NIH grant awards by state and by common medical conditions. For medical conditions, I extracted records that contain these RePORTER project terms:

Working with cache files

Large cache files necessary for plot generation are stored using Git LFS. To speed up cloning, use git clone --filter=blob:none. After cloning, run git lfs pull to fetch the cached data when needed.
