Test PRO version for compatibility with most popular VPN apps.

Compatible VPN apps

Adguard can work without any issues with next apps:

App Date Version Comment
Tunnelbear 04.10.16 2.5.2 ...
Hola 04.10.16 1.6 ...
Master Pro 05.10.16 1.3 ..
VyprVPN 03.11.16 2.15.0 ...
Avast Secureline Vpn 15.02.16 4.0.4 ...
PIA 17.01.17 2.0 ...
Betternet 17.01.17 3.3.11 ...
PureVPN 20.01.17 5.3.1 ...
NordVPN 20.01.17 2.3.0 ...
IPVanish VPN 25.01.17 3.0.5 ...
F-Secure Freedome VPN 14.04.17 2.6.6 ...
Windscribe 25.05.17 1.15 If Windscribe was enabled first, Adguard doesn't block ads. If Adguard was enabled first, Windscribe doesn't hide DNS address (IP is properly hidden)
encrypt.me 27.04.18 4.2.0

Incompatible VPN apps

With next apps only one can use VPN (enabling one vpn disenables another):

App Date Version Comment
ExpressVPN 04.10.16 6.1.1 Only one VPN can be enabled
Shadowrocket 04.10.16 2.0.11 Only one VPN can be enabled
Disconnect Premium 10.10.16 2.2.1 Only one VPN can be enabled
HotSpot Shield 04.10.16 3.5.9 Adguard VPN even cannot be enabled
AirVPN 05.10.16 1.0 I wasn't able to understand whether it works with adguard or not
A.BIG.T 17.01.17 3.0 Only one VPN can be enabled
Astrill VPN 14.04.17 2.1.0 Only one VPN can be enabled
Opera Free VPN 11.05.17 1.1.7 Only one VPN can be enabled
openvpn 08.11.17 1.1.1 Only one VPN can be enabled

@ameshkov minor thing I noticed:

The blog (https://blog.adguard.com/en/adguard-ios-1-3-0/) and release page (https://github.com/AdguardTeam/AdguardForiOS/releases/tag/v1.3.0-pro) both link to https://github.com/AdguardTeam/AdguardForiOS/releases/tag/v1.3.0-pro#162 for the list of compatible VPN apps. Took me forever to find that it should have linked to issue 162, aka, this page (#162).

If that can be fixed that'd be great so others aren't as lost as I was. :-)

It’s not compatible with Mullvad. I have the legacy app (full blocking) on iPhone and accidentally updated to the new version (w split tunnel option) on iPad.
Mullvad works by importing a user-generated script into the OpenVPN app on iOS. Connecting VPN disables Adguard and activating Adguard disables OpenVPN. Might it be possible to modify the script to change this behavior?
It’s a shame because Mullvad provides excellent speeds and doesn’t require term contracts. If there’s any suggestions I’m willing to test it further.

The Freedom productivity tool lets you schedule limits on what websites you can access. It uses some sort of fake VPN. It's available in iOS, Mac and Windows versions.

I am not able to tell if it affects Adguard at all.

@zebrum ,
OpenVPN & AdGuard are incompatible, no matter the .ovpn profile used. It's something I experimented with repeatedly using .ovpn files of all sorts. It's a tunneling issue, irregardless of the VPN profile used. While it would indeed be a great addition to AdGuard Pro's abilities, unless you're able to manipulate OpenVPN's API so that it is compatible with AdGuard without harming the security and reliablity the OpenVPN protocol itself, I don't see it as being at all possible.

  1. Disconnect Pro:
    https://goo.gl/PSqvfE
It establishes a local (fake) VPN profile in VPN configurations.
It seems that it also provides real VPN if doing in-app purchasing.
(I guess that it additionally establishes a real VPN profile in Personal VPN.)

Disconnect Premium:
https://goo.gl/nmnwH4
It establishes both a local (fake) VPN profile in VPN configurations and a real VPN (IKEv2) profile in Personal VPN.
Its users can choose to together or alone use local/real VPN.
When using its real VPN, Disconnect Premium is compatible with AdGuard Pro.

Screenshot:

image

  1. Windscribe:

If Windscribe was enabled first, Adguard doesn't block ads. If Adguard was enabled first, Windscribe doesn't hide DNS address (IP is properly hidden)

Windscribe only establishes IKEv2 profile in Personal VPN.
AdGuard Pro can block ads even if enabling Windscribe first.

  1. VPN Unlimited:
VPN Unlimited app establishes IPSec/IKEv2 profile in Personal VPN or OpenVPN/UDP/TCP profile in VPN configurations.
(VPN Unlimited already stopped its ad blocking function.)
    a. When setting OpenVPN/UDP/TCP protocol in VPN Unlimited app, it's not compatible with AdGuard Pro.
    b. When setting IPse/IKEv2 protocol in VPN Unlimited app, it's conditionally compatible with AdGuard Pro.
If enabling AdGuard Pro first, VPN Unlimited app will ask to turn off another VPN when trying to enabling VPN Unlimited afterwards.
    It's VPN Unlimited's problem.

However, we can directly enable VPN Unlimited (IPsec/IKEv2 protocol) first, and then enable AdGuard Pro.
If enabling VPN Unlimited first, AdGuard Pro can be compatible with VPN Unlimited.

OpenVPN sets up VPN profile in VPN configuration.
AdGuard Pro for iOS and most adblockers on iOS also establish VPN profile there, so they are only compatible with those real VPN which establish VPN profile in Personal VPN.
Otherwise, do a feature request for letting users selectively decide AdGuard Pro VPN profile in VPN configuration or Personal VPN.
(If I don't wrongly remember, old AdBlock v1 & v2 by Future Mind set up dummy VPN in Personal VPN.
But it seems that VPN profile in VPN configuration can let adblockers do more things.
So almost all adblockers on iOS set up VPN profile in VPN configuration now.)

Well, ProtonVPN supports IKEv2.

@lancelot-moon ,
+1 for ProtonVPN. It’s all I will use on iOS & one of two services I will use on desktop. Riseup’s Black service is the second, though recommendations from two current users or a history of radical activism is required to first establish an email account with their service.
Regarding ProtonVPN IKEv2 versus ProtonVPN via OpenVPN (pref TCP connection) - yes, I would choose ProtonVPN IKEv2 over any other service, regardless of protocol. However, OpenVPN is the more secure protocol so I use OpenVPN when I do connect to a ProtonVPN server. The only advantage of IKEv2 over OpenVPN is that it will remain connected when the iOS device enters sleep mode.
@lancelot-moon Thank-you for your post.
