Stage 1b (related to cc1555a of master branch):
Fairly rudimentary fixes. Mostly fixing data type and casting inconsistencies.
NOTE: There are quite a few additional patches compared to the master branch Stage1. So please have a look through the diffs. My original patches for v2.3.2 included some extra patching not appropriate to master, but still apply to v2 branch.
