Would it be difficult to detect which version of SQL Server is running and auto-detect which version to use? I'm thinking of .NET connection strings where you don't need to specify which version you're using.

Would be a big win.

That's a great idea. Unfortunately it's not in the functionality of ODBC, which our driver is based on. We could do some custom processing, but it would be difficult and really outside the purview of the driver.

Could a separate pass be made that queries the version, in a generic
format, and then other code branches based on that?

I was alluding to something like that with the words "custom processing". I'm sure it could be done. It just won't be easy since ODBC doesn't provide that functionality directly. However, I like the idea and have incorporated it into our feature requests. Now it will go through the regular priority pipelines and we'll see when it comes up.

Of course, we are open to taking pull requests for contributions such as this, so if you feel inclined... :)
