Is a different shell better, or is there a way to speed up ANSI-term? Or should I just use Terminal.app?

M-x term actually seems pretty cool. Might be fine just using it? Do some research.

I have tried term, ansi-term and multi-term in vanilla emacs, but these seems to be really slow e.g. while rendering mc. Also tried terminal-emulator which is pretty fast, but lacks colors. Did you find any option to use full-blown terminals in emacs after all? I would really love to keep my terminals inside emacs, but this seems impossible now :(

I never found one in Emacs that did everything I wanted and was fast enough, so right now I am just using a separate terminal emulator :( Maybe some day...

Thanks for the feedback, same here. Currently I use lilyterm which is an awesome terminal with even regex search feature, but I miss so many things from emacs :)
I will keep my eyes open, and I hope that "some day" will come soon.

If the problem is incredibly slow screen clearing, see http://emacs.stackexchange.com/a/24079
