The Copier
History of the program
As it exists on 8/19/88:
Read physical disk working
Write to physical disk working
Read logical disk working
Write to logical disk working
Format physical working
Format logical working
Write buffer working
MYARC Floppy Disk Controller driver working
Semi-user interface installed: allows copy with selection of input,
output drives and format skew and interlace. No echo of user
input, though.
08/21/88: Modified J. Peter Hoddie's (JPH) screen input routine some. Now
theoretically works under MDOS. On single character entries,
does not require <ENTER>.
08/22/88: Modified input routine some more. Will use a valid-character
string so as to only accept valid chars on approriate
inputs.
Wrote a lot of subroutines for user interface (e.g. BINASC,
ASCBIN, ASK, ACTION, others).
Wrote user interface for main option 1 (copy disk to disk).
The bloody thing is most friendly thing I've ever written --
and _such_ a bitch to code.
08/23/88: User interface for main option 4 (read parms from disk) done.
Working great.
Wrote user interface for main option 3 (format disk).
Changed DISK/S to have separate calls for read and write.
08/24/88: Got format disk working rather well.
Talked to J. Paul Charlton (JPC) for about 50 minutes on
Delphi. Got much info about how to speed things up.
08/25/88: Disk read and write sped up a lot, thanks to JPC info. However,
can't get format any faster <sigh>. Formulas for timings are
as follows:
Revolutions Per Minute = 300
Revolutions Per Second = RPM / 60 = 300 / 60 = 5
Degrees Per Second = RPS * 360 = 5 * 360 = 1800
Optimum Skew = 50 degrees
Time for track access and step on read or write:
[ (360 * sides) + OS ] / DPS =
[ (360 * sides) + 50 ] / 1800
Time for disk: tracks * track & step time
Complete formula for read and write:
[ (360 * sides ) + OS ] * Tracks / DPS =
[ (360 * sides ) + 50 ] * Tracks / 1800
Time for format and step on a track, one side:
( 360 * 2 ) / OS = 360 / 900 = 0.4 seconds
Time for format and step on a track, two sides (ideally):
( 360 * 3 ) / OS = 360 / 600 = 0.6 seconds
However, I've not been able to obtain the "ideal" time for
format. On double sided, it should take three revolutions --
one for side 0, one for side 1, and one while stepping.
Unfortunately, it seems the computer isn't fast enough to
switch sides while on the index hole. Thus, two sides
actually takes _four_ revolutions. Hence, the updated
formula:
Time for format and step on a track, two sides (realistically):
( 360 * 4 ) / OS = 360 / 450 = 0.8 seconds
Thus, on an 80 track disk, two sides, the time is taking:
Format: 0.8 * 80 = 64.0 sec
Read: [ (360 * 2 ) + OS ] * Tracks / DPS =
( 720 + 50 ) * 80 / 1800 = 34.2 sec
Write: same as read 34.2 sec
TOTAL TIME: 132.4 sec
It's actually taking 136 seconds or so, so add about three
seconds for restoring to track 0 and stuff like that. It
definitely beats the 150 sec. it was taking before Paul told
me all this stuff, but it's not as good as the 120 sec. or so
it could be if my format could be made faster. But it will
do.
08/26/88: JPC saves the day again. . . 80 track disk copy now taking only
1:56. His idea was to write and format on same pass: format
side 0, write side 0, format side 1, write side 1, then an
extra revolution for stepping. Thus, writing takes one
second per sector, total of 80 second + 34 for read + two
seconds for misc. stuff (like restoring to track 0) = 1:56.
Amazing.
Sent copy to Jerry Coffey (JC) for testing.
08/29/88: Wrote Configure Defaults command -- mostly working.
Forced screen color set -- should make compatible with V1.08
of MDOS.
08/30/88: Finished Configure Defaults command -- working really nice.
Separated default skew & interlace for 16 and 18 sec/trk.
Sent to JPC, JPH, and JC. (Notice how 'J' keeps showing up?)
08/31/88: Changed format routine to use FDC 30ms Write Delay after step
and drive select. Sent to JC. JPC on vacation until 9/6/88.
09/01/88: Copy disk to disk(s) working.
Sent to JPH and JC.
09/05/88: Catalog disk working, except for display of floaters. This due
to fact that Lou Phillips fucked up in the writing of MDOS
math routines -- the float to string conversion doesn't work
worth a fuck.
Fixed problem with Copy disk to disk(s) not letting you use
input drive even when entire disk read into memory.
Sent to JPH and JC.
09/06/88: Sent source code to DISK/S and MYARC/S to JPC.
09/13/88: Modified format routine a bit to more closely resemble MDM3
format routine. Format doesn't always work for JC, yet
MDM3 always does. Thus, this attempt.
Sent to JPH, JPC, JC.
09/14/88: Fixed a few problems that JPC found in source code.
Fixed bug with trying to format an unformatted disk.
Sent to JPH, JPC, JC.
09/19/88: Changed to try to fix 3.5" drive problem. Sent to JPC.
09/20/88: Another change for 3.5" drives. Sent to JPC, JC.
09/23/88: Wrote CorComp device driver. Works great! <psyche!>
09/25/88: Made minor adjustments to code.
09/26/88: Changed busy command for restore and seek so as to give drive
plenty of time to execute its command.
10/06/88: JPC fixed some bugs in MYARC/S. Fixed problem with 3.5" drives
by adding two gap bytes in format table.
Added routine to write message "Many thanks to PaulC. None to
JR." at end of tracks, one byte per track. JR is Jack Riley,
vice-president of MYARC and the bane of the existance of me,
Peter, and Paul.
10/14/88: Added code to read and use step rates, rather than always using
fastest rate possible.
Added code to detect MDOS V1.10 or higher and, if using that
version, to display the numbers on a disk catalog.
10/27/88: Fixed problem with CC step rate times
Added screen thanking those who helped. Accessed by hitting
CTRL-T from main menu. Includes rude slap at pirates.
Time running out . . . . 16 days until Chicago faire.
10/31/88: Added yet another delay to the format routine.
Changed catalog routine to use PaulC's CFS (Convert Floater to
String) and my own four-line CFI (Convert Floater to Integer)
(was four lines due to fact that number could only be from
-7 to +7). Thus, catalog works with all versions of MDOS.
11/02/88: Changed catalog routine to read drive alias table in MDOS so
that entering a drive number results in that physical drive
being accessed. This fixed the one big inconsistency in
HyperCopy (and the only thing that horribly upset JPH when he
was talking to me last night <grin>).
11/04/88: Made more changes. Not working on JPH's system <fuck>.
Created title screen using TIA and custom-designed compression
algorithm.
Starting to feel anxious <understatement of the week>.
11/07/88: Made final changes. Got to work on all systems!
11/09/88: Fixed bug with asking it to access non-existant drive and bug
with defaults getting screwed up if entering same drive
for input and output on a multi-pass copy disk to disks
command.
