The region lock is a very useful feature, but it does not seem to work as I
would expect it. With lock I understand that I could not accidentally move
or remove a region (or, eg, change colour). However, I can still remove the
region through the list (though this is an effort and therefore one is not
likely to make a mistake), but cannot click on a source in the image to
view the information (and to find now this particular source in the list
is extremely tedious).
I addition, it is useful to know which region was selected through the
list (by highlighting in some manner), though the region stays locked.

@acsch the lock is intended for disabling the editing of a region within the image viewer. For example, if you disable drag-to-pan, it will rather pan when you click than select the region. And likewise when you have this enabled and you drag the imaging, it will move the image rather than the region. That seems intuitive to me. Perhaps what you're describing is an additional, separate mechanism.
Ah, yes, I see what you mean. In that case, another kind of lock (or edit)
would be what I want. Again, as an example, ds9 allows region settings of
various kinds: on editing, moving, rotating and deleting. In my case, as I
had explained, I would like to be able to click on a source and view it
or change a colour but not be able to move it or delete it.
