Integrated Card Processing Options

Hardware Card Type(s) Processor(s) Platform P2PE
ActiveX controls Credit, Debit, EBT, Gift, US EMV Many Windows Varies by processor
ID Tech Sign&Pay Credit, Debit, EBT Mercury/Vantiv Windows, Linux Yes
Generic magnetic stripe reader Gift Mercury/Vantiv, Valutec Any No

ActiveX controls

This is the only way to support EMV currently on the roadmap. Flexibility in changing hardware and/or processors should be a net pro; the drawbacks are the operating system restriction and very limited customization of hardware behavior or transaction flow.

To run a transaction, the cashier must first finish ringing in items.

  1. Enter DATACAP to launch the payment menu
  2. Choose a card type such as credit, debit, or EBT. Some card types have additional sub-options.
  3. Enter a payment amount or simply press enter to accept the default.
  4. Wait for the customer to swipe or insert their card.
  5. Transaction processes and success or failure info appears on screen.
  • Depending on the card type and hardware support a signature may be required via the payment device or via a paper receipt.
  • Enter RP to print a paper slip regardless of hardware support (or if hardware is having issues)
  • Credit transactions can be reversed by entering VD and then on the next screen a password to confirm.

It's possible to skip over step 2 by appending a tender type to the command, e.g. DATACAPCC. The command DATACAPAUTO will skip directly to step 4 defaulting to card type credit (or EMV, if enabled) and the current transaction total as the amount.

ID Tech Sign&Pay

N.B. This device has been discontinued by the manufacturer. It may still be possible to find used devices or old inventory but this is almost certainly not a future-proof option circa 2018.

The ID Tech device supports point to point encryption (P2PE) but is tied to one specific processor. There is no way to add EMV support.

When running a transaction, the customer can swipe their card, choose their card type, and if necessary enter a PIN while the cashier is still ringing in items. When the customer is finished:

  1. Enter CCFROMCACHE to launch the payment process.
  2. Enter a payment amount or simply press enter to accept the default.

Generic magnetic stripe reader

This option will likely never support anything but gift cards. A simple magnetic stripe reader is no longer sufficient for several kinds of cards and is woefully insecure compared to P2PE solutions.

To tender an amount to the gift card simply slide the gift card through the reader. To activate a new card, add value to a card, or check the balance of a card enter GD to bring up the gift card menu, choose the correct option, and slide the gift card through the reader.
