CivFactions Wiki
CivFactions is a unique server unlike any other. Although inspired by popular features from other civilization and faction servers, the plugin used here is created specifically for this particular server.
Quick Start Guide
If you're coming from another minecraft civilization server like Civcraft, CivEx, or Devoted, you will find many of the core concepts here to be similar. If you're brand new to this type of server, don't worry! This guide will give you the tools you need to quickly start building your city and nation.
Gameplay Tweaks
- New players and re-spawning players without set beds are spawned randomly within a 10,000 block radius of 0,0.
- Chat is limited to a 1500 block radius.
- All mined ores drop the ore block instead of the mineral.
- Ore smelting through furnaces is disabled and must be done through Factories.
- Cobblestone and Dirt are affected by gravity like gravel and sand
- Enchanting books is disabled
- Enderchests are disabled
- Many vanilla recipes are disabled in favor of Factories.
- Growth rates of plants and animals are reduced across the board.
- Experience orbs are disabled. See XP Production.
- Villager trading is disabled, certain mob drops are restricted
- The nether is vanilla, but normal portals are disabled. See Warps.
The Map
The world map is a 12,000 block radius circle with a custom generated map. Sea level is at Y=90 across the world, nearly 30 blocks higher than vanilla minecraft.
The nether is a 3,000 block radius circle and scales with the overworld at a 4:1 ratio. Vanilla nether portals are disabled, but the tech-tree contains teleportation blocks that can be used to access the nether for quicker transport across the map.
The end world is also a 3,000 block radius. Rather than containing only a single island made of end stone, the end world is an alien landscape with soaring mountains, and bottomless gorges. Players who have been imprisoned by other players by the Prison Pearl mechanic are trapped in the end, so it can be a dangerous place to visit.
Rules
The following actions are prohibited and will result in a ban at discretion of the admins:
- Using hacked clients
- Sending erroneous packets to the server inconsistent with the vanilla client.
- Material and/or block duping
- Intentionally causing in-game lag
- Exploiting game glitches - if in doubt, message the admins
- Using alt accounts. (Once imprisoned you are not allowed to use a new account.)
- Avoiding a ban
- Doxing or releasing PRIVATE information of players in or out of game. Information that has been shared in public channels is considered to be PUBLIC and has no expectation of privacy. Be smart. Don't share your personal info and err on the side of caution when referencing another player's personal info.
- Do not assist others in breaking any of these rules.
The following client-side mods are allowed:
- Mini-map mods (Voxel, Rei's, JourneyMap)
- Radar mods (Radarbro)
- Automation mods (MacroMod)
- Gammabright
- OptiFine
- Armor & Effect overlays (ArmorStatusHUD, DirectionHUD, etc.)
Groups
Players are able to organize themselves into groups - which can be used to reinforce structures and limit access to chests, doors, and other intractable items. Groups are similar to factions, but there is no limit to how many groups a player can be a member of.

Reinforcing
Reinforcing allows players to protect their buildings and possessions from griefing and thieves. When a block is fortified with a reinforcement material, it has to be broken many times before it actually breaks.
For example, if you reinforce a chest with a single diamond, a thief would have to break that chest 3000 times before they could steal your items! This makes it difficult to steal players possessions, but still requires you to be smart about how you secure your belongings.
When creating buildings, it is common for players to reinforce every block with stone to prevent someone else from coming along and easily destroying it.
Only group members with the rank of BUILDER can create or bypass reinforced blocks for their particular group.
Reinforcement Materials
Listed below are the reinforcement materials and the strength value associated with them.
| Material | Strength |
|---|---|
| Stone | 150 |
| Iron | 750 |
| Diamond | 3000 |
| Diamond Block | 8000 |
Use the following commands to create block reinforcements.
Note: For those players familiar the Citadel plugin, the matching Citadel commands will also work and are listed in the 2nd column.

Mining
Ore distribution is modified from vanilla minecraft - here are the notable differences.
- Normal ores have been reduced to 1/6 their normal occurrence
- Coal and Iron ore exist from Y 0:128
- Gold, Redstone, Diamond, and Lapis ore exists from Y 0:80
- Scattered Quartz ore also exists in the overworld from Y 0:75
In addition to the normal ores, there are also concentrated veins of diamond ore that exist throughout the map and can range is size considerably. They exist from Y 0:90.
The Ice Mountain biome also contains extra dense pockets of Iron Ore, with higher concentrations towards Y=0 and reduced concentrations as Y increases.
All mined ores drop the ore block itself, not the mineral. Vanilla smelting with furnaces is disabled, so the only way to process your ores into minerals is through a Ore Smelter factory.
Using a pick with the Fortune enchant adds a slight possibility to drop the mineral item instead of the ore.
Chat
Normal chat range in-game is limited to 1000 blocks.
Each group also has a private chat channel that can be accessed by using the /f c <group> command. This lets members of a group message among each other privately.
Direct messages can also be sent to individual players using the /msg <player> or /tell <player> commands.
Special Blocks
Factories
Factories are special blocks that allow players to access the full tech-tree and increase production output.
See the Factories page for more detailed information.
Snitches
Snitches give players the ability to investigate grief and theft activity by keeping a record of player's activities within its field. When reinforced to a group, it will keep a record of the entry, any block breaks and placements, and any block usage inside the field of players who are NOT on the snitch group. It will also notify members of the group when other non-group players enter its field.
The snitch field is a cuboid spanning 11 blocks from the snitch in every direction.
Hitting a snitch with a stick creates a Snitch Controller which allows easier easier control and even remote access to the snitch block.
Snitches will record if a player starts to mine a reinforced block, even if the block is not broken.
When a snitch is broken by a player not on it's group, the name of the person who placed the snitch will be shown. So be careful where you place snitches! It's always best to ask permission of the property owner before placing a snitch.
Snitch Commands
| Command | Description |
|---|---|
/sn report [page] |
Shows the report for a snitch |
/sn clear |
Clears the report log for a snitch |
/sn rename <name> |
Renames a snitch to the given name |
/sn refresh |
Refreshes a snitch controller with the latest information |
/sn notify [on] |
Toggles or sets the entry notifications for a snitch |
/sn find |
Shows the snitch information for a current coordinate |
Secure Signs
Secure signs are normal minecraft signs with the added feature that when reinforced to a group, only people on that group are able to read the text. This allows players to label the contents of chests without having to worry about potential thieves being able to see where more valuable items are stored.
The secure status can be toggled by hitting the sign with a stick. When the text is black, it is visible to everyone. When the text is blue, it is visible only to those players on the group.

Bastions
Bastions are blocks that allow players to limit the ability of other players to place blocks in their cities.
This feature is not complete and is still being implemented.

Warps and Teleportation
Warp Drives are blocks that allow teleportation to other parts of the map. There are two types of warp drives, a Nether Warp Drive, and a Direct Warp Drive. Both of these methods allow for quicker movement and transportation around the map.
A Nether Warp Drive will transport players to the nether dimension at coordinates corresponding to 1:4 that of the overworld. If a nether warp was located at (4000, 4000) in the overworld, the teleported players would be sent to (1000, 1000) in the nether. Additionally, the Y coordinate is cut in half, since the Y limit is 1/2 that of the overworld. Since the nether is scaled to 1/4 that of the overworld, it can be used as way to travel from one point of the map to another at 4x the speed. A nether warp can only be created from the overworld.
A Direct Warp Drive is more expensive than a nether warp drive, but will transport a player between any two points in any dimension. There must be a direct warp drive at both endpoints, and they are exclusive, meaning they must be linked to one another and can't be shared. A direct teleport link must have an operational direct warp drive at each endpoint for teleportation to work.
Since the warp drives are expensive blocks and may be prone to theft, teleportation is done through the use of a less expensive Teleport Pad which is remotely linked to the drive block.
To link a teleport pad with a warp drive, hit it with a stick to create a teleport linker which will display the coordinates of the teleport pad. The teleport linker can then be used to link the teleport pad with a nearby warp drive or to a remote teleport pad in the case of a direct warp drive. Simply hit the warp drive or remote teleport pad with the linker and the two will become linked.
For a direct warps, the teleport pads must first be linked to their respective warp drives before they can be linked together.
Steel Door
A steel place is a factory produced item that operations just like a normal iron door, with the addition that it only takes damage every 1/10 times a player tries to break it who is not on the group.
Iron doors are can be mined considerably more quickly than obsidian, so the door can become the weak point in a secure bunker. By using a steel door, it is not needed to stack several iron doors in a row to get the same security as a single obsidian block.
Steel Plate
A steel plate is a factory produced pressure plate that has the exact same properties as a steel door. It only takes damage every 1/10 times a player tries to break it who is not on the group.
Prison Pearl
Prison Pearls are a server-side mechanic that allows players to imprison other players in the end dimension with an ender pearl. This allows griefers and criminals to effectively be banished from the world map where they can do no more harm.
When a player kills another player while carrying an ender pearl in his hotbar, the killed player is transported to the end dimension and the ender pearl turns into a prison pearl. As long as the prison pearl exists and has strength, the imprisoned player will be stuck in the end.
Strength
Every prison pearl has a strength value that must be maintained to keep the prison pearl active. The strength of the pearl will erode over time and if it reaches zero, the imprisoned player will be freed. The starting strength of the prison pearl will keep a player imprisoned for roughly 6 days before the player is released.
To strengthen a prison pearl and thereby keep a player imprisoned for a longer period of time, the pearl must be run through a Dharma Factory with Cuendillar.
Jailbreak
Jailbreaking is a way for players to break a someone out of their prison pearl without physically getting access to the pearl itself. This method can be useful when the prison pearl is being held in a well defended base, however it is costly and success is not guaranteed.
To jailbreak a prison pearl, first you must create a Moksha Rod using the Dharma Factory. The rod must then be charged to a given strength level by running through the Dharma Factory.
It is 8 times more costly to charge a Moksha Rod than to strengthen a Prison Pearl.
When the rod has been charged to the desired level, use the /pp bind <player> command to bind the rod to the name of the imprisoned player you wish to free. Then use the /pp jailbreak command to attempt the jailbreak. If the strength of the Moksha Rod is greater than that of the Prison Pearl, the imprisoned player will be freed, otherwise the jailbreak attempt will fail. The entire Moksha Rod is consumed whether or not the jailbreak attempt is successful.

XP Production
Experience orbs have been disabled in favor of generating XP through farm factories. See the Farm Factories section for more details.
Custom recipes have been added that allows players to convert between emeralds and bottles of experience. A single emerald can be crafted into 9 bottles of experience, and vice-versa.
PVP
CivFactions PVP has the following modifications:
- Players are combat-tagged upon login
- Golden Apples are disabled
- Ender pearl velocity has been reduced and can only be thrown once every 10 seconds
- Throwing an ender pearl will combat-tag you
- Strength II is disabled
More PVP modifications are in the works and will come later, especially considering the changes that Minecraft 1.9 is bringing.
