SATP Terminology Document (draft)

Term Description Source of Reference
Address A short, alphanumeric string derived from a user’s public key using a hash function, with additional data to detect errors. Addresses are used to send and receive digital assets. NIST-IR-8202
Asset Status The set of data, parameters and keys that define the state of a digital asset within a network.
Asset Lock The temporary of disablement of any technical changes to the state of a digital asset. The technical mechanism to implement a lock is dependent on the specific network. Message Diagram v16
Asset Binding Message Diagram v16
Asset Assignment Message Diagram v16
Blockchain Blockchains are distributed digital ledgers of cryptographically signed transactions that are grouped into blocks. Each block is cryptographically linked to the previous one (making it tamper evident) after validation and undergoing a consensus decision. As new blocks are added, older blocks become more difficult to modify (creating tamper resistance). New blocks are replicated across copies of the ledger within the network, and any conflicts are resolved automatically using established rules. NIST-IR-8202
Digital Asset Any asset that is purely digital, or is a digital representation of a physical asset. NIST-IR-8202
Digital Asset Owner Person or organization whop is the legal owner of a digital asset.
Double Spend Transacting with the same set of digital assets more than once. NIST-IR-8202
Network (Asset Network) One or more computer systems, possible arranged in a distributed manner, which holds a digital asset that is recognized by all participants in the network. Message Diagram v16
Gateway The collection of services which connects to a minimum of one network or system, and which implements the secure asset transfer protocol. SATP Architecture v03
Origin (Network) The current network where the digital asset is located. Message Diagram v16
Destination (Network) The network to which a digital asset is to be transferred. Message Diagram v16
Originator The natural or legal person as the owner or holder of a digital asset who authorized the transfer to the asset to a beneficiary. FATF Recommendations #16 (Feb 2023)
Beneficiary The natural or legal person or legal arrangement who is identified by the originator as the receiver of the requested digital asset transfer. FATF Recommendations #16 (Feb 2023)
Transaction A recording of an event, such as the transfer of assets between parties, or the creation of new assets. NIST-IR-8202
Burn (Burning): A transaction carried-out on a digital asset within a network that destroys the value associated with the digital asset.
Mint (Minting) A transaction carried-out within a network creates a new digital asset associated with an economic value.
Asset transfer (cross network) The transferal of value associated with the digital asset from one network to another, involving the coordinated destruction (burning) of the digital asset in the origin network and the creation (minting) of a new equivalent digital asset in the destination network.
