Mac or Linux instructions

Install distribute (alternative to setuptools)

$ curl -O http://python-distribute.org/distribute_setup.py
$ python distribute_setup.py

Install pip (alternative to easy_install)

$ sudo easy_install pip

Install virtualenv

$ sudo pip install virtualenv

Optionally install virtualenvwrapper Follow the instructions at https://pypi.python.org/pypi/virtualenvwrapper

Ubuntu/Debian Linux only instructions

Or if you're using Linux, it's even easier with apt-get:

$ apt-get update
$ apt-get install python-dev python-setuptools python-pip python-virtualenv

Mac only instructions

If you're using MacOSX, and you don't want to use the system Python, you can install another Python with Homebrew.

$ ruby -e "$(curl -fsSL https://raw.github.com/mxcl/homebrew/go)"
$ brew install python

When you use Homebrew to install Python, it already comes with pip, so you don't need to install it separately. More info at http://mxcl.github.com/homebrew/ and special instructions for Homebrew and Python: https://github.com/mxcl/homebrew/wiki/Homebrew-and-Python

Windows only instructions

Simply download the Bitnami Django stack from here: http://bitnami.org/stack/django

Double-click the .exe file to launch the installer.

If you get an error message about msiexec.exe, make sure that it's on your PATH. See here to alter your PATH variables.
