Django install instructions

Mac or Linux instructions

Install distribute (alternative to setuptools)

$ curl -O
$ python

Install pip (alternative to easy_install)

$ sudo easy_install pip

Install virtualenv

$ sudo pip install virtualenv

Optionally install virtualenvwrapper Follow the instructions at

Ubuntu/Debian Linux only instructions

Or if you're using Linux, it's even easier with apt-get:

$ apt-get update
$ apt-get install python-dev python-setuptools python-pip python-virtualenv

Mac only instructions

If you're using MacOSX, and you don't want to use the system Python, you can install another Python with Homebrew.

$ ruby -e "$(curl -fsSL"
$ brew install python

When you use Homebrew to install Python, it already comes with pip, so you don't need to install it separately. More info at and special instructions for Homebrew and Python:

Windows only instructions

Simply download the Bitnami Django stack from here:

Double-click the .exe file to launch the installer.

If you get an error message about msiexec.exe, make sure that it's on your PATH. See here to alter your PATH variables.

Installing Django

Make a virtualenv and install Django into it

$ sudo virtualenv mydjangoenv
$ source mydjangoenv/bin/activate
(mydjangoenv)$ pip install django
