The wifi on sophia's pc is always too weak and unreliable, no matter the kind of USB wifi interface used. Can we either provide a better wifi interface, or sort out some ethernet connectivity in the room? This has caused an issue today when Mahi attempted to use the PC and was unable to access the internet and local network, therefore she was also unable to transfer files via the samba share.

I see that Gerald's PC is connected via an ethernet switch of some kind, but it is the only pc connected in this manner. Perhaps we can reuse this switch at the entrance to the room and route some cables?

Both Mahi and Russ have noted this issue to me. This prevents Mahi from using the cutter as she's doing most of her work on a device that does not have USB connectivity, and relies on the network drive in order to transfer files over.

This seems like a good idea. Do we have a long ethernet cable that would go round the edge of the room at low level?

That sounds good - I was a bit concerned about loose cables going around doors (like we had in Gostins)

There is a network switch attached to Gerald's pc that only has one of its ports in use. That's a switch we can use if we could put it in the center of the room against the behind of Gerald maybe?

Is there any real reason why we're using a switch in that room at all, rather than the three spare ports on the Ethernet wall socket?

I'll take a non-invasive look around the place today when I'm in maintaining and documenting the 3d printers as mentioned would be done in #1325. My thoughts are that this should be completed when we're done provisioning morris in #955, as the layout of the room could change. Things could be organised in a way that conflicts with changes that may be made now.

@amcewen I believe it was discovered at some point in the undocumented past that only one of those sockets work. I will verify if this is true tonight.

Can I throw in another complication...
Monty is almost finished and will require a network connection too, as will whichever PC we end up driving it from, so 2 more needed there right away.

The connection is just spotty. Wifi has a 50% chance of working, depending on the radio noise in the space.

The reason I'm saying this should wait is because of what Sean has just mentioned, since we wouldn't want wires to have to be rerouted once things change in the room once more.
