At #makernight last night we couldn't use the vinyl cutter because Gerald was in use and so there wasn't a computer set up for it.

We tried getting a printer driver for it set up on Jackie's laptop, without any joy. Next step is going to be trying hooking it up via a USB serial adapter (although we need to find the DB9->DB25 adapter that's currently fixed to the thermal printer).

In our playing around with it I happened upon http://www.securetech-ns.ca/camm-linux.html which looks like it might be a solution for getting it working with Linux. Seems to only work with slightly older versions of Ubuntu, although it also seems there's a new version in the works which will presumably fix that.

Or we set up the shuttle as the large laser's computer, and use the laptop as the vinyl cutter's

@cheapjack

Yes Ive tried installing the vinyl cutter driver once on another computer and failed but that may be a mac thing: I think we have a CD that we keep with all the keys for gerald and none of them seemed to work. Be great to get independant of that laptop tho' it really will die soon... That software looks great. Do you mean the serial USB cable thats already on the vinyl machine? Patrick did we once get Gerald working on another computer?

@Thingomy

Machine has had had Linux installed (by Beth), had inkscape installed and had step 1 done from here:

http://www.securetech-ns.ca/tux-install.html#file:///server1/tux-install.html

There was an issue with linux in that one of the repos no longer exists for that version, google says the fix is to turn off the repo, this has been done. The installers grumbled generally, so it may not have gone well.

amcewen can give more details on which machine I was doing this to and why, to be frank I wasn't really paying as much attention as I should have been.

Yes, Gerald can be run from the Shuttle PC in the workshop.

The Shuttle is now set up as the laser cutter PC for Gerald and the laptop is now set up by the vinyl cutter. Next, the shuttle pc needs Corel Draw installing.

So we need to buy a licence for Corel Draw then?

Yes. Unless we can transfer one of the earlier licences from the "vinyl cutter" laptop. It has both X4 and X5 installed.

@DefProc I installed X4 on Gerald-PC over the break and this is working from what I can see. I've made it more obvious by placing a short cut on the desktop. X5 is on there too but would need the license serial number to be found.

I'll close this down - please open up again if I have the wrong end of the stick
