I've noticed that a lot of people have music playing from their laptops when they are working out of hours in the main room or if they're on their own in the workshop because it's more enjoyable.

I quite like hearing other people's music playing when I'm working, as long as it's not some very distracting overpowering classic opera tune or something.

Not having music any music playing is the default position under the condition of group-think, where people take a guess at what everyone else in the group thinks and adapts themselves accordingly -- not always accurately.

If we had a public speaker system that played music via bluetooth or wifi in different areas of the space, it would be easier to communicate our music preferences with non-verbal cues and conventions (eg no one should ever feel bad about turning the public volume switch down or off). Headphones are available from the drawers for anyone who wants to continue enjoying the soundtrack -- or to not enjoy the soundtrack of loud people having very long conversations on the phone.

Could also twin it with a decibel logger that lights up so people get feedback from when their voice is getting very loud on the phone.

Great idea. Now if we could feedback the emotional state of those in the office to our algedonic system we should be able to do office mood modification. e.g. Some David Guetta for those Monday mornings etc.

My vote also for 4′33″ high on the playlist...

How close is this to being technically built, with speakers and some endpoint that can be given instructions to play files at a particular volume?

(I noticed how JR had a very soothing mood music going on in his office late last night when working through photogrammetry stuff, and @amcewen has an endless stream of Radio6.)

We might as well have music tech rigged up and on tap with a set of instructions on the wiki -- before we get into the weeds of deciding what to play on it.

All the young people seem to have cloud playlists they share with their pals.

Does DoES have such things?
