We've been making some progress on an OpenSource / OpenHardware project for live streaming events.

This seems to be of interest to a number of people within the community and, I believe, may be of benefit to other Makerspaces.

There are of course a range of privacy issues with live streaming of events and/or internal streaming. If this was to happen it would seem sensible to get ahead of any potential problems with an agreed policy framework?

My starter for ten suggestion is that

  • initially public live streaming only occurs on an event-specific basis in the DoES events room
  • any event which is to be live streamed is to be clearly advertised as such in advance
  • clearly visible notices are placed at the entrance to the room indicating a live stream is taking place
  • details are given on where the live stream is going, if/where it is being archived
  • contact details are given for an on-site point of contact should any attendees have issues with this

Then there's a separate conversation about whether there is value in having "always on" cameras monitoring equipment such as 3D printers. If there is perceived value, then my suggestion would be

  • devices point directly at the equipment to be monitored, positioned so as to capture a minimum of any other activity
  • devices stream video only, not audio
  • devices have a visible indicator to show they are active
  • a notice is placed beside any device detailing that it is live streaming video only, what is being live streamed, and where it can be monitored.

I'm also not sure what impact GDPR has on all of the above?

I imagine @paulfurley would be the best man to ask regarding GDPR compliance.
