Original ticket http://trac.elgg.org/ticket/1886 on 40089888-04-13 by brettp, assigned to unknown.

Elgg version: 1.7

When I contribute to a discussion it would be a good option to, at the same time, be able to request notifications of further answers/contributions to that particular discussion.

would be nice to have a subscriptions collection, and a page to manage it. replies to threads would have a checkbox to subscribe to the thread with the reply, on by default, or the default could be changed by admin. no more notifications for an item would be sent until the user visits that item after a notification.

best method used by several forum software.

This is besides an automated subscription also useful if i could subscribe to an object (blog, discussion), without contributing.

+1 for this "CC me" type feature.

FYI This plugin already provides comparable features https://github.com/ColdTrick/content_subscriptions

Any objections to try to make a PR that adds the features of the content_subscriptions plugin into core?

I'd prefer doing this as part of the subscriptions system rewrite. Then again I'm not sure when that's going to happen, so implementing some lighter version first could also be a good option.

I think I'd like to see a design doc first, but definitely interested in getting the feature in.
