It would be great if 'open' and 'closed' eaves could be added as a building part.

Use case: Norris ICEMR data

Would you have any proposed definitions here? I get quite a lot from homeowner's manuals from the developed world (e.g. here), but I think you may need more general definitions.

I added some defs from an architecture dictionary, but they focus on visibility of the projecting roof members. The important thing in your case is access of insects, correct?

Hi Pier, yes the relevance for us here is to access of insects.

Here's a paper I found http://jme.oxfordjournals.org/content/46/3/505
We are in no hurry for this and I think we could discuss here with as many people as possible what's best.

For example I assume eaves can be blocked with solid material or a mosquito screen - maybe we need three terms? Sarah's going to find some photos, ask our collaborators, and so on.

Thanks for getting started with our request!

Thanks, I'll clarify this in the classes I've just created. Even if we add more general terms later, the semantics of these will not change. Please make sure your authoritative references are to the IDs or PURLs of the classes in question, rather than the "labels". The latter can change in future revisions, but the former will be constant.

This is true, there are lots of interesting materials that one can use. However, I'm fine with keeping this class about truly "open" eaves which allow physical access through gaps. We can add other classes for open-eaved structures which have been blocked.

Sarah's going to find some photos, ask our collaborators, and so on.

Great! We can centre the discussion here if you like (photo uploads and all). It will be a good chain of evidence for the term creation.

Hi Pier,

Here is a cartoon illustration of how the malaria vectors enter into houses with open eaves (even if doors and windows are screened) Anopheles gambiae in particular will not be stopped by this and will find the open eaves and enter the house, increasing likelihood of malaria transmission.

Below is a typical african home with open eaves.

Just made a new release, the first set of terms you need should be in there. We'll leave this thread open until we've gathered more feedback, however.
