Hey @pbuttigieg @kaiiam, I am looking utilize an ENVO term to describe 'continental shelf marine sediment' but unfortunately I can only find the "marine sediment" term referring to deep sea basin sediment types. Can the "marine sediment" term be expanded to include the continental shelf region?

Cheers,
mschecht

Hey @mschecht perhaps we can look at this later.

@pbuttigieg recommends "It would be better to use more terms (one stating that the sample came from a coastal environment and one or more describing the actual physicochemical properties of the sediment)"

Hi @mschecht

This is a good point: the label is misleading. Since the term has been out for a while, I can't change the def without obsoleting it. I can, however, change the label and introduce another term to describe the shallower sediments.

However, I don't think the new term would be as useful to you as including several ENVO terms to describe the sample. For example:

marine bathyal zone biome
continental shelf
sulphate-reducing sediment

@kaiiam, as part of PR #481 could you...

  • change the label of marine sediment to "deep marine sediment"
    • Please also change the synonym type to "has related synonym".
  • Add a new superclass marine sediment with a similar definition, just not requiring it to be in the deep
  • Add a class, shallow marine sediment, (subclass of marine sediment, sibling to deep marine sediment) with a synonym "neritic marine sediment". Again, similar def, but this time the sediment should be on a shelf, slope, or rise.

@kaiiam many thanks - please make a note to close this once the PR is merged and a new release is made.
