I've recently been working on multiple datasets that report tree ring measurements, so I'd like to suggest

NRT: tree ring
is_a: organic material ENVO:01000155

be added to ENVO. However I appreciate this may not fit as is into ENVO and so would welcome your suggestions as to how best to capture this concept in ENVO.

Thanks,
Varsha

@jaiswalp @cooperl09, where should tree rings go?

Is it the same as annual rings.

It can be an anatomy term or wood quality trait. I think besides telling the age (dendrochronology) they are also used to model impacts and responses to climate as well http://ltrr.arizona.edu/about/treerings

for @VarshaKhodiyar I think it is an organic wood product.

Many thanks I will use PO:0004514 growth ring - unless you are planning to add an ENVO term that captures this?

@jaiswalp thanks, yes I agree with organic wood product

@VarshaKhodiyar In this case, I think PO:0004514 is more appropriate as we're dealing with an anatomical entity itself, rather than the environment around it or determined by its presence. In general, however, if you can't find an existing ontology that has a class you need, ENVO can host most things temporarily.

On a related note, can your system handle obsolescences? That is, can it trace replaced by or consider annotation properties? This would be important should we surrender classes to an external ontology.

@VarshaKhodiyar I'm closing this as the original issue is solved, but please do think about how your system reacts to obsolescence.
