# Ember CLI [Source](https://ember-cli.com/user-guide/#getting-started) ## Installation - [ ] Verify that node.js is installed. _Note:_ Do not use `sudo`, as permission problems will be created with some Ember CLI commands. - [ ] OS X: install node.js with `Homebrew`. - [ ] Verify Node is set up correctly by typing the following commands on the command line. Both should output a version number: ```sh node -v npm -v ``` - [ ] Globally install the Ember CLI: `npm install -g ember-cli` - [ ] _Note:_ Although this step was in the Ember Get Started guide, `npm install` states Bower is deprecated in favor of WebPack. Skipping this step for now. ``` Globally install Bower, a package manager that maintains front-end dependencies up-to-date (including jQuery, Ember and QUnit): `npm install -g bower` ``` - [ ] On OS X and other UNIX-like systems, install Watchman v4.x or later. Watchman provides Ember CLI a more effective way to watch project changes. _Note 1:_ `Nodewatcher` has trouble with large trees on OS X; `Watchman` solves these problems. [Watchman documentation](https://facebook.github.io/watchman/) `brew install watchman` _Note 2:_ `npm` has a similarly-named watchman package which is not what we want. If `npm watchman` is installed, a warning similar to the following will occur: ```sh invalid watchman found, version: [2.9.8] did not satisfy [3.0.0], falling back to Nodewatcher ``` If this occurs, uninstall with `npm uninstall -g watchman` The situation can be clarified with the command `which -a watchman`. - [ ] For testing services, install [PhantomJS](http://phantomjs.org/): `npm install -g phantomjs-prebuilt` ## After installation - [ ] Create a new project: `ember new app-name`. Ember creates an app-name directory and generates the application structure... or use the [Ember client template installation checklist](cklist-ember-install). - [ ] Launch the app: ```sh cd new-app ember server ``` - [ ] Navigate to `http://localhost:4200` to see the new app in action. - [ ] Test results are at `https://localhost:4200/tests`
