May 2024 Update

Just tested and this bar still works! I went ahead and updated my dotfiles to use the latest Nerd Fonts. I'm using JetBrainsMono Nerd Font, which you can get here, and you will also need jq which you can install with Homebrew.

My minimalist catppuccin macchiato setup! Everything from Google Chrome, Discord, Spotify, Terminal and now my bar!

The empty space in the middle is where my MacBook Air's notch is, with the moon phase to the left, and the current Spotify song to the right (can be clicked to pause). The lollipop can be clicked to move to the next track. There's some padding on the sides of the bar because FaceTime adds an orange dot to the top right coner of the screen during a call.

• Popup menu for the panel displaying all configs
• Slider and a few osascript to make it change volume level
• deweller/switchaudio-osx to list and change my output devices

@TmLev I would say that's because it made me realize that I use the top bar more than I thought, and having to rewrite basic system functionality, combined with the time I spent learning and creating my own config (I'm not just a copy-paster), hasn't paid off

@juliogc Same, it was also especially hard to revisit and maintain after a while of not looking at it. At some point I realized it was also a little silly having two toolbars as I use the native app ones pretty frequently.

Slight redesign with some new features:

• I am using the excellent sketchybar-app-font to display the active applications in the spaces. The active space animates their active applications to disappear:

• Left clicking a space will focus it, right clicking a space will destroy that space; clicking in the separator (>) will create a new space (all using yabai SIP disabled)

• Mousing over the music icon in the center gives a small spotify player widget with player controls:

• The volume icon on the right side can be clicked to toggle mute and animates volume changes:

I've made the changes as indicated above, but the album cover doesn't seem to update. Could you please advise on how to correctly replace the Spotify icon with the album cover?

I got a fix working, but it's pretty glitchy still and takes a bit to update
In plugins/spotify.sh in the update() function, you have to add this

I've been really digging the experimental position=left feature. The extra vertical space gets very handy.

I mostly have one app per space and this screenshot is just for the rice. Top five icons are main spaces, bottom four are open workspaces, not showing a secret tenth space where I hide my toggle terminal hehe. Icons are dimmed when there are no windows. The little dot next to the space icon is a lil indicator for a yabai stack since I always forget where I have them.

Not shown is a diy pomodoro timer that pops up under the clock on a shortcut. Apps shown are most commonly used ones: lf, lazygit, nvim, bottom, Firefox, Obsidian.

Color palette is loosely based on a the Square iTerm theme which interestingly sets a saturated magenta for normal green. Otherwise the few bright colours are reserved for highlights since I have the attention span of a kitten.

Thank you for the kind words! I spent most of this weekend taking a break from porting plugins and working on cleaning up my code. I also lack any kind of artistic ability so I just looked up some polybar themes and colored them with the basic nord colors. I use rofi/polybar/bspwm on linux and I’m just so happy I can get a similar set up on macOS with alfred/sketchybar/yabai!

Sketchybar is significantly more powerful than I had assumed at first glance, I’m definitely going to spend some more time writing plugins and making the bar more responsive to mouse events in the near future!

This is my first ever fully lua driven config. I really think there is so much potential in using lua for the configuration of the bar, because the communication no longer happens through fork->exec->mach but only through mach messages, completely cutting out the (large) fork->exec overhead. The lua module for sketchybar is available here SbarLua.

The menus on the left side can be swapped with space indicators with the small toggle (or via a shortcut by calling sketchybar --trigger swap_menus_and_spaces). The menus are clickable and present the correct menus from the default macOS bar.

How do I change the color of the Topbar?

It's SbarLua, so I don't know.

Basically it just converts lua tables to the commands you should be used to in bash when you set properties via cli. So you can read the sketchybar documentation and find the property you are looking for and make a table for it.

Here is my WIP setup loosely based on Tokyo Night. Built on top of @FelixKratz 's dotfiles and everything shared here (Thank you 💯). Some tweaks:

1. SKHD modes with key help replacing the window title when necessary
2. Music status with spotify-tui status (wip)
3. network horizontal pop up with ip

Overall very pleased with how much sketchy bar offers in terms of flexibility and power. Great!!

@parkervandyk I've been very selective when it comes to which applications are shown on my setup screenshots because you only hide the titlebar on certain applications:

• iTerm2:
  • Open Preferences > Profiles > Window > Style: select "No Title Bar"
• Firefox:
  • Add this to userChrome.css:

• VSCode / VSCode Insiders / VSCodium:
  • Install Apc Customize UI++
  • Allow VSCode / VSCode Insiders / VSCodium to modify itself:
