note the different class names

this was so that someone could 'hide' the year portion but keep the month day part, it's for skinning the look of the archive... which now someone can't do ...

some older sites are skinned to have a nice graphic behind it ;/

How do you mean? The year is not displayed, but the space remains free.

because each of the two segments have individual classes assigned to them you could do like:

.archive-date-month-day { display: none; }

and it would only display the year. You could also add different aspects of font and style to the year or the month/day as you see which and you can put an image behind it and float the month day under it skinning it graphically

thats what its purpose was, so that you can have separate display entities available
