Description of the problem

When trying to encode with h.265 (videotoolbox) codec (new Mac Mini 2018), after few seconds encoding stops with error

HandBrake version (e.g., 1.0.0)

HandBrake-20181118140641-9dc0a7a

Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 18.04 LTS, macOS 10.14 Mojave, Windows 10 1809)

There hasn't been any fix for this yet. We don't have any hardware to debug on, and the single mac contributor is busy with real life right now, so It'll get looked into when he has time.

Was wanting to test T2 acceleration of HEVC, so I had a look at what was going on...

Running T2 H264 side by side with T2 H265 I found out that H265 was returning frames out of order in groups of 4. Frame return order was 0 4 2 1 3 8 6 5 7 ...

Suspected that the reordering logic was tied to B-frames. job->areBframes is set to 0 or 1 in encavcodec.c function encavcodecInit()

 job->areBframes = 0;
 if ( context->has_b_frames )
        job->areBframes = 1;

changed that to:

 job->areBframes = 0;
 if ( context->has_b_frames )
 {
     if ( job->vcodec == HB_VCODEC_FFMPEG_VT_H265 )
         job->areBframes = 4;
     else
         job->areBframes = 1;
 }

That fixed this problem. Have 0 idea of any ramifications else where...

Does it also work if you set areBframes to 2 instead of 4? 2 should work. The code was originally written to only handle mpeg4 which doesn't have b-pyramid. Also, I think the value of context->has_b_frames may be 2 in this case. Could you print it's value and see if this is true?

I just took a look at ffmpeg's videotoolboxenc.c. It doesn't look like it accounts for b-pyramid and only sets has_b_frames to 0 or 1. Other encoders will set this to 2 when b-pyramid is enabled. So if 2 works, and I'm right about the value of has_b_frames, we'll have to implement a close variation of your patch.

Reading over VT documentation, it looks like b-pyramid might be tweakable with the property kVTCompressionPropertyKey_MaxFrameDelayCount. It would be interesting to see how the output changes if this property were set to 1 in ffmpeg libavcodec/videotoolboxenc.c function vtenc_create_encoder and also check that the behaviour returns to current behaviour if the value is set to 2 (it's default is unlimited).

If this setting results in toggling b-pyramid off/on, an AVOption could be added to allow setting this and we could get finer level of control over this.

I noticed that the other h265 encoder does what you are talking about:

Thanks a lot for the feedback.

I've thought a bit more about MaxFrameDelay and I don't think it's going to do what I really want. It will most likely reduce the out of order groupings and not necessarily affect b-pyrimad directly. If you feel like playing with it, I'm still interested in knowing for sure the effect. But I don't think it's likely to be very useful.

Since there have been no issues opened for h.264 on this, I'm assuming this problem only exists for h.265? A little odd that they would only use b-pyramid in h.265 🙄

Someone might want to test h.264 with it's highest settings to see what the encoder does (high profile, level 5.2). It's possible h.264 does the same thing when configured "right". It allows setting profiles and levels while the h.265 encoder does not (only allowed values are Main and Main10, AutoLevel).
