It looks like you did not properly download the pure text version of the rpi-update script, instead getting an html page. Try re-downloading via the command in the README:

wget -O /usr/bin/rpi-update && chmod +x /usr/bin/rpi-update

Make sure you get the short-URL correct.

If you still have issues, try obtaining the script via a git pull, or try downloading the .tar archive of the full git repo and extracting the script from there. If you download/obtain the script manually, you'll still need to set the permissions as shown above.
