The OSX version of RAR has been updated to 4.1.1. The new download URL is http://www.rarlab.com/rar/rarosx-4.1.1.tar.gz

I don't think the existing formula really even installs anything once it's been downloaded. This is because there is no installer included in the download, and the only installation needed is to copy the files contained into their corresponding directories. You need to have default.sfx, rar, rarfiles.lst, and unrar in all the same directory. The remaining files are documentation mainly (rar.txt is the user manual, technote.txt is a short file specification for the RAR format, whatsnew.txt is the ChangeLog, readme.txt is a short feature listing, and order.htm is documentation on how to purchase a copy of RAR).

I don't know how to make advanced formulae, so I'll leave this task to someone else for now. On my system, I just copy the files from the tarball to a directory I created call /opt/rar and just add that to my PATH. Since the rar and unrar programs are mostly self-contained (they link to libstdc++, libgcc_s, and libSystem), they can most likely be put in /usr/local/bin, but they do seem to reference the default.sfx and rarfiles.lst files and expect them to be in the same directory as the executable (a la Windows applications). Oh, the pains of making a formula for proprietary software!

Do we even package this? I don't see a formula for it.

This is not in core, and has been previously rejected due to the license: mxcl#2427

Is there a general repository for non-free software such as this? I've got a basic formula ready if so.

Homebrew-alt has a non-free directory: https://github.com/adamv/homebrew-alt
