Font Forge is now installed. Solved the problem via online research. I didn't have the necessary GCC version (perhaps related to Apple Xcode modifications).
These commands helped paved the way : brew update - brew tap homebrew/homebrew-dupes - brew install apple-gcc42

Please follow these steps when reporting issues:
https://github.com/mxcl/homebrew/wiki/Bug-Fixing-Checklist

Installing GCC should not be needed.

@adamv @mxcl @mistydemeo @Sharpie @jacknagel It worries me a bit that people are fixing issues by installing GCC.

Thank you for the reply, Mike.
I read the bug fixing checklist very carefully. Obviously, as a non-programmer, I may have not understood all the points.

I have no personal stake in GCC. Are you suggesting that the way I installed GCC may cause future problems for me?

Anyway, after 4 days of an intensive open source education, I'm glad that I can start designing fonts.

No problem, I wasn't blaming you at all, just wanted to let you know. This is more perhaps a team/Homebrew problem than yours. I suspect you're having the same problem as #13635 so am closing. Thanks!

@FriedChicken we aim to make this list accessible to all who want to use Homebrew, how can we improve it for you? What did you find harder to understand? Thanks.

The checklist was clear -- and I followed it step by step. But I still couldn't install FontForge.
It seems that I needed to add GCC which surprised Mike M.

EDIT: Mxcl : did you look at my config gist? is there something else that you would've recommended?

Okay, the checklist is not a bug-fixing solution, it's an aid so we can help fix the bugs better.

EDIT: --config looks fine. What we really needed was the error output from the build. But no problem now.
