I often code with two windows open, one for code, one for a shell. When I'm done editing a file, I press C-x C-c to quit Emacs. However, when I do this in Mac OS X, my computer crashes.

Steps to Reproduce

M-x shell C-x C-c yes

$ specs emacs brew bash os hardware

specs 0.2

Until this is resolved, I have to remember to safely quit the shell process before quitting Emacs.

C-x b *shell*
"Process shell finished"
C-x C-c

Does this occur with binary or self-compiled versions of Emacs? Regardless it's not a Homebrew bug that's crashing your system; it will have other issues as we don't have any code that could do that (even if we wanted to).

Dunno, I just used brew install emacs, and noticed this kernel panic the other day.

adamv commented Apr 13, 2013

Closing since we have no other reports of this happening with a Homebrew-installed emacs.

I'm having the same problem - although I can't reliably reproduce it, M-x term, with /bin/zsh, usually crashes OS X when I exit (C-x C-c). Running emacs 24.3.1, evil mode, and brew 0.9.4.

My first day trying out emacs in earnest (well, evil mode aside). Guess that means back to vim...

Also having this problem. Anytime there is an active process and I close, kernal panic.

Also having this problem. 100% reproducible.

We're encouraged to file bug reports at https://bugreport.apple.com. Apparently, duplicate bug reports are considered votes for fixing a bug.

Exact same issue with OSX 10.8.4. Tried both homebrew emacs 24.3 and 23.4 and both reliably cause a kernel panic.

Did anyone figure out a version of emacs that does not cause this issue?

Same here. Now using iTerm's duplication feature.

disabling python jedi mode seemed to solve it for me. I think it is specific to having running helper processes.

Having the same problem and it does not happen w/ the version of emacs found here: http://emacsformacosx.com/

Same problem: kernel panics when closing while there is an active process.

I'm having the same problem. Normally when I'm quitting without saving changes. Reverting back to http://emacsformacosx.com/ as really bugging me.
