We prefer source builds over binaries.

But sadly to "fully" compile Neko, a number of dependencies are need, (eg. MySQL, Apache 1.3(yeah, weird it is not 2.x), zlib, sqlite etc.), and the paths to dependencies are fixed, which cannot easily wired to use the homebrew ones.

The previous version although compiles the neko binaries, its core libraries are actually skipped, thus not really complete.

Is it necessary to have a source build version? Is there any gotcha using pre-built binaries?

The original commit message for this formula was:

This is the initial commit of a formula for building the virtual machine for
programming in the Neko programming language. This formula does not embed the
"mod_neko" into the Apache web server, nor does it build the libraries to
support MySQL 4 interaction, since those would necessarily require the
installation of large amounts of software that a user might or might not have
intended to install.

Is this precompiled binary universal or 64-bit only? (We still support 32-bit Snow Leopard).

Recommend removing from core (it can go in a tap or something) if we're not going to build from source.

The precompiled binary is 32-bit only, and yes it supports Snow Leopard.

If you prefer a build from source version, I'm working on it and it is half way working. My version is able to build the vm, with some of its libraries (ndll), like the previous versions. I will have to ask the nekovm author to clean up a bit of its libraries build script in order to complete it.
