Protect Your Girl Scout Cookies with a Raspberry Pi
Admit it. Few things in this world bother you more than when someone opens up your favorite box of Girl Scout cookies and starts devouring that luscious goodness that you look forward to all year. You brainstorm for hours and hours trying figure out where to hide your Somoas, Trefoils, and Thin Mints so no one else in your home will get close to your stash. If you knew the instant someone compromised your ingenious cookie hiding spot, you would utilize every ounce of resourcefulness and athleticism in your body to save your Precious before it is too late.
We are going to build our own layered security system around our cookie stash using a Raspberry Pi, a couple of sensors, and a cloud service. You will receive a SMS alert the instant someone is near your cookies and the instant someone touches your cookies.
Project level: Beginner Approximate time to complete: 20-30 minutes Importance of completion: Is there even a question here?
In this step-by-step tutorial, you will:
- learn how to use a GrovePi (http://www.dexterindustries.com/grovepi/) to quickly connect sensors that can be read by a simple Python script on a Raspberry Pi (http://www.raspberrypi.org)
- learn how to send sensor data in real-time to Initial State (https://www.initialstate.com), an Internet of Things data analytics and visualization platform.
- learn how to configure instant SMS and email notifications on sensor readings.
