we need a policy for file name case and extension. #2
it didn't matter as much on case insensitive file systems. On case-sensitive file systems, maiko emulates (imperfectly) case-insensitive behavior. As with maiko's emulation of a versioned file system, there are workflows where git assumptions conflict.

I think it should start with an approximation of "While you may be using a case-sensitive file system, consider that others may not be... never create files which differ only in case from an existing file". It's probably possible for the git pre-commit hook to check that the commit is not adding such a file.

The problem with changing the case of a file is the poor interaction with git -- if you do a

gt mv FOO foo

to just change the case of the file name to lower case, while running git on a case sensitive file system, when you checkout the change on a case insensitive file system (Mac and Windows) -- without making any other change to the name -- it will error during the checkout.

The convention we follow in most but not all of Medley is one where directories are lower case and file names are upper case.

I actually set up the git-compare to explicitly make sure that the directories are lower case and the names are unchanged (usually upper case). Separately, I am also trying to enact a policy where you don’t use git to move files around, you move them to and from a separate medley directory.
