A baker has a whole loaf of bread. How many cuts must she make to have 12 slices? Ans. 11. However, if you make three vertical cuts and two horizontal cuts you can do it in five :)

Ha! He is correct though that wasn't the intention of the exercise.

Although with the word 'slices', I don't think cutting it in that way would result in what i would call bread 'slices' though they would all be equal sized pieces.

If it had to be changed, maybe something along the lines of "breaking a stick x number of times to get x pieces" but It''s probably fine as is in most cases.
