Do you plan on making Leaflet one big AMD-module or rather many modules with dependencies?

I think yes. At least initially. Do you think there's a need to break it down?

If you build a larger web app with Require.js and build the app with R.js you'd get the minimum amount of Leaflet-code in your build for free because R.js would act kind of like a linker and only link in the code that you use.
This is of course already possible with the build script in Leaflet, but in by using R.js you would be able to state your dependencies right where you use them (which might make it easier to keep them up to date).
This is all very hypothetical though and only based on reading through the docs of Require.js and Jam.js, so really not sure at all if it is a good idea. :)

I think I'll consider enabling AMD for separate Leaflet modules in future if there's a demand, but for now Leaflet core can be monolithic as it's minimal already compared to other scripts that might be used in a large scale Require.js-powered app.

So is Leaflet an AMD module or not? If I use require.js to do this:

require(["leaflet"], function(leaflet) {
    console.log(leaflet);
    console.log(L);

then both leaflet and L are the leaflet object. I'm new to AMD and require.js but so far I'm under the assumption that the proper AMD approach is supposed to eliminate global variables from your code, so that everything is modularized and self-contained. But the above code proves that leaflet still creates the global variable L, even though it's being loaded as an AMD module.

So is Leaflet an AMD module or is it just sort-of an AMD module cause it still creates a global variable to access?

@Jakobud Leaflet creates a global variable because many plugins depend on it. You get easily get rid of it by calling Leaflet.noConflict().
