Event autopanstart is described in the docs, but I don't see that it is implemented. Was this event removed?

That's quite weird, I remember adding it but can't find it in the code and Popup.js history too...

@agos, you should receive a movestart when auto panning starts. Check out this fiddle: http://jsfiddle.net/cxZRM/ - open F12 console, and then click the red circle on the map. But you'll get movestart with any movement. Do you find that a separate autopanstart is useful?

@oslek thanks for the clarification. For now I'm indeed a combination of movestart + popupclose and it works. A possible use case I see for an autopanstart event is to save the position before the autopan to return there after panning even if the map was manually panned while the popup was open (whereas using movestart would not return after panning, obviously). Not an incredibly common case, but somebody might need it.
