I know about this function and param true. Map change it’s center without animation but with all tiles redrawing. How can I turn off this redrawing? I need that only new tiles preloaded without full map tiles updating.

Oh, now I see... What is the use case here? Do you want to have no panning animation permanently, or just want to set center without animation and redrawing in some cases?

I try to implement kinematic drag of the map.
It would be nice, if in my special cases I can change map center without animation and redrawing. With such centering I can create custom breaking effect after map dragging.

Build-in animation nice for static object but not for dynamic. I try change leaflet-map-pane left top positioning but without good tiles redrawing. I've tried different ways.

I have all calculations for implementing this idea and have problems only with breaking after dragging.
Any advice will be good for me ).

Oh, you can use undocumented map._rawPanBy(/*Point*/ offset) method to change map position in pixels relatively for kinetic dragging. If you want custom animated panBy, see the source of panBy in Map.PanAnimation.js file.

By the way, kinetic dragging is planned for the next stable version (0.3).

So, has this been added to 0.3? I did a diff and it doesn't seem there's a new option. I also need a way to completely turn off animation of panTo. The reason is that I need to sync the map movement with other on-screen stuff that isn't running in the browser - I'm working on a desktop application.

I basically need this:

  var offset = map._getNewTopLeftPoint(center).subtract(map._getTopLeftPoint()); 
  map.fire('movestart');
  map._rawPanBy(offset);
  map.fire('move');
  map.fire('moveend');    
}

L.Transition = null;

to be put somewhere after map initialization to work really instantly, though I'm not sure what the side-effect of this are.[/EDIT]

Alternatively a flag to switch off animation entirely would be great too.

Thanks for the details! This wasn't addressed in 0.3 but I'm going to work on refactoring this for the next release so that it can be easily turned off on the fly.

Great, thanks. In the meantime, I can life with my workaround. The only
thing that I'm concerned about is that I have to set L.Transition to
null. Is that something that could cause problems? I'm basically doing this:

function initialize() {
[setup]

 map = new L.Map('map_canvas', mapoptions);
 map.fitBounds(<initial bounds>);
 map.addLayer(cloudmade);

 L.Transition = null;

}

and later on I use panTo() to set the new center. Works very well but as
I said turning transitions off like that feels like a hack that could
backfire.

Did this ever make it in? I still cannot see a way to disable the pan animation in the docs, nor a straightforward way in the code / CSS. I can hack it but would prefer not to as a long-term solution.

You asked about use cases: I am using setView to lock one map's view to another. The panning animation creates lag when the view is changing by dragging. In this situation I still want the zoom animation, and would even like the pan animation when the view changes by a method other than the user dragging one of the maps, eg clicking a search result. Ie, a map option isn't exactly what I'd want. A flag on setView would be closer, though there may be other solutions that are preferable.

Nope, I'm refactoring setView/panBy/setZoom/etc. methods so that you can pass an options object alongside arguments, and specifically force or disable animation there among other things.
