10. Define Categories' Structure

Objectives:

  • Learn how to structure and customize Category Options, Categories, Category Combinations for Data Elements in DHIS2.
  • Learn best practices in creating Options, Categories, Category Combinations, and Data Elements.

Assignment overview:

Now that you have created a basic Data Element, let's learn how to break them down into finer categories. It may be useful to create preset categories if standard indicators are broken down by groups (e.g. age < 5, and age >5 are reported separately). Doing so will create data bins within DHIS2 and speed up data analysis.

Instructions:

  1. Based on the Data Elements we established earlier, and including the following information of our required Indicators, define the Category Options, Categories and Category Combinations required.

 

Disaggregate information & requirements:

  • We need to disaggregate the number of students receiving school meals by their gender

  • The after-school literacy activities offered are book club, reading competition, tutoring, and a collection of many smaller programs

  • The facilities we have the capacity to construct/improve are classrooms, kitchens, commodity storage, latrines and water points
