I like how it's currently kinda an M but maybe we can come up with something nicer?

Checking for nice GitHubbers that might be able to help. I don't want to fire off a public call just yet, but totally appreciate the sentiment.

GitHub designers are pretty busy these days, so it's unlikely that an icon would come from there. Any community effort would be totally awesome.

Alright, I'll throw my hat in the ring. Here's my first attempt, inspired by the current "logo":

mantle

And here in its natural habitat:

I don't think we necessarily need to represent the name physically, but if we were to, I'd rather use something related to the Earth's mantle.

We originally came up with the name while trying to think of words meaning "fundamental" (since the framework forms the base layer of an app).

@GEESIGNZ

Just scribbling around. Do you like it?

@GEESIGNZ Thanks for taking a stab at it!

I like the visual aesthetic, but we're still really interested in something that conveys the meaning I mentioned in my comment above. I don't know exactly what that should look like, but I'm happy to discuss it further!

@robb

@GEESIGNZ I like the ribbon-y look of that, I think I'll play around with that too.

I've been messing around with this layered cube. The idea being that it models the layers of the earth's crust, has a solid foundation and I guess blocks are pretty modular, too.

Does this go more towards what you are thinking of, Justin?

@robb Nice! That's definitely a lot closer.

It looks a bit sterile, though. I think it's because it fits into a nice hexagon—maybe rotate the perspective a bit?

At the risk of sounding super anal, the light sources aren't super consistent either. But that's less important. 😉

I used paper to quickly mock a possible idea for a mantle logo, a globe (or sphere) with a section cut out exposing the mantle in the shape of an 'M'

@chadedrupt That looks amazing! It'd be awesome to have that as the org's avatar, if you're interested. 💎🙇

@chadedrupt

@jspahrsummers Yeah, I'm happy to help out if I can. If someone else has some better artistic ability then they are more than welcome try and implement it as well. What kind of style where you chasing? A rendered kinda look, or a more flat geometric style or a stylised style like the mock?

@jspahrsummers
Mantle member

In my opinion (disclaimer: as someone who's not good at design), smooth lines with hard edges and more-or-less solid colors would look really nice. Also, I don't want it to be a 3D sphere or anything, but I really like the depth in the "M" cutout.

@chadedrupt It'd be awesome if you want to do it, but if not, I can probably ask a GitHub designer to help make a final version now that we have a mockup. Just don't want to give away your baby if you're interested in working on it. :)

@chadedrupt

@jspahrsummers Yeah rope one of your designers in if you can (Surely the world has enough Octocats 😜 ), I happy to contribute just the idea. If they can't then I'll take a stab at it. 👍

👍 although I'll always have a soft-spot for those elaborately rendered Mac icons

It's a couple weeks out, but I think we'll have help for this. 🎉

Sweet, looking forward to it!

@rathahin Thanks for the suggestion! I think we already have a direction, though, per the above discussion.

Nice! I just read over. looking forward to see the final logo.

🆒

@rathahin Sweet! A GitHub designer already offered to help with this, so I'd like to let him take a shot, but yours is great too, and I'd be happy to use it if he's unavailable.

@jspahrsummers

So that fell through. 😞

@rathahin Would you mind if we used your version of the logo? I'm happy to attribute it in the README (or wherever you'd prefer). ❤️

@robb
Mantle member

Really dig the rendered version, but I 💖 the warm tones in original sketch and how it's a circle

@rathahin

@jspahrsummers that is my pleasure to contribute to Mantle. That is not important to put my name in the README, because I didn't contribute much. Since, I start using Mantle framework in project that I work for my company, I feel love it. and I hope the Mantle will be more helpful. Thank to all developer who keep maintain the framework.

@robb Yes, I would do another version to the original sketch.

@rathahin

mantle logo step 2

Please have a look this one!

@notxcain

I think the depth of the cut should be same in all directions

@robb
Mantle member

I think I like this version best, so far

For the org's avatar image, we'd probably just have planet, with or without space around it. The smallest version of the avatar that I found was on Projects that power Github for Mac, which is about 40px by 40px.

That would look kinda like this:
mini

Maybe less shading and a bigger "edge" on the cut-out would make it easier to make out at that size?
I think Justin made a good point earlier:

[…] smooth lines with hard edges and more-or-less solid colors would look really nice. Also, I don't want it to be a 3D sphere or anything, but I really like the depth in the "M" cutout.

@rathahin

Option 1, I am still not happy with this yet. It hard to make every edges look clear in small size. I'll try complete difference but not so much difference.

@rathahin

mantle 12

Option 2, or maybe with solid colors.

@robb
Mantle member

Oh, I like this direction! What do you think about keeping with the rounder cutout?

I've played around a bit, maybe too abstract tho?

@chadedrupt

Here is a possible shape

mantleframeworklogoshape

@rathahin

Nice one!

@rathahin

Not sure about this one, but hope you guys like it.

@notxcain

This one is geometrically correct. Great!

@rathahin

I just follow the model shape by @chadedrupt

@jspahrsummers
Mantle member

I really appreciate all the work that everyone's been doing on this! It's been so amazing to have all of you helping out.

Starting from @rathahin's latest version, could we maybe rotate the sphere forward (toward the camera/viewer) a bit, so more of the “crust” is hidden in the back? Then, if there's any way to add the continents and water back in, that would be 💎 for me.

At some point, we'll just have to pick something. I don't know that we'll ever come to 100% consensus. 😄

@rathahin

mantle_final_1

Should we keep the M shape like this, because it will keep the detail of M shape if we use logo in small size. imagine we use as favorite icon on website.

@alanjrogers

@rathahin That looks great! thanks for all your work on this!

👍 from me.

@robrix

👍 ❤️

@rathahin Looks awesome, thank you so much! 🌟

Can you render it at 1024x1024, then I can add it to the repository and the organization profile?

@rathahin Would you be willing open source the .psd or what have you under a permissive license?

@rathahin

mantle_logo_1024

I will not open source the .psd. but you can ask me for .psd i will send you by email. I just create to-do list to write article on my blog about Mantle logo, and create powered by mantle animation splash screen as open repository.

@chadedrupt

Nice work 👍

@jspahrsummers
Mantle member

@rathahin You're welcome to hold onto the PSD, but would you be willing to release the final image under the repository's current MIT license?

@rathahin

Yes, sure. Please check this repository https://github.com/rathahin/MantlePoweredView
