My comment in 4.9 that wait-free synchronization is rarely used in practice is apparently becoming out of date with the improved wait-free techniques that have come out in the last couple years. This section should be updated by someone who knows more than I currently do about these recent developments -- which could be me if I first learned about them.

I think it would be appropriate to say that this was true at least as of 2011 and that sufficient progress has been made, particularly in the period 2011–2014, to suggest that wait-free synchronization's day may be coming. In the notes section, I would particularly cite Kogan and Petrank PPoPP 2011, Kogan and Petrank PPoPP 2012, and Timnat and Petrank PPoPP 2014.
